The servant was suffering and dying on behalf of Israel’s sin.

The servant of Isaiah 53 is an innocent and guiltless sufferer. Israel is NOT described as sinless. Isaiah 1:4 says of the nation: “Alas sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity. A brood of evildoers, children who are corrupters!”

Isaiah 53 is not a metaphor for the nation of Israel. It cannot be. It describes the servant as innocent.

“He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.”
