I personally believe the church is not readily available at this time but is instead still in her place and as least some of her children are scattered throughout the nations. For those children it is a trying time.

I realize the words but the reason Jesus instructed instructed him to do that was not for him to sacrifice his possessions but rather for him to show compassion in some manner. His reaction revealed that his wealth has become an idol and thus Jesus’ words.
Paul wrote something to the affect that if we give up all of our possession and have not charity then we have gained nothing and there are some who have been doing just that.
Yes, but I don’t hold to Paul’s words like I do Jesus’. So don’t Paul that one on me!
If Jesus instructed the rich man to give up his goods because they had become an idol to him, could the same not be said for most of us today?
Also Kerwin, the early church ‘held all things in common’ and no ones possessions were their own. From memory, a married couple sold some land and held back on part of the money and they died as a warning to the early church. Of course, usually that does not happen today unless you are an Amish or something similar. But, where in scripture does it say that that communal type living should change? The only place I can see is where Paul says that in the last days love will grow cold and men will become lovers of self etc.
