The body is dead without the soul. The soul is dead without the spirit.

God can destroy both soul and body forever. In fact this is the Second Death.

The soul and the spirit is like bone and the marrow.

When God breathed (spirit) into Adam, he became a living soul.

His soul was not alive before that and the body was obviously a shell. Once God's spirit entered, Adam became a living soul. A living soul animates and directs the body. The body is what ties you into this realm.

Therefore a spiritual body or a body composed of spirit will tie you to that realm.

And we look forward to a body like the resurrected Christ. He will call us brothers. Out lowly bodies will be transformed into a body like his. Read Revelations of his description. Hair white as snow. Eyes like fire. Legs like glowing hot metal. A glorious body.

    Mike,

The soul is what gives the flesh life at this time; the Spirit is what gives creation life after the resurrection.

Flesh is also used as an idiom; as your sources tell us, but was not used in 1  Corinthians 15:44 & 46.

    Kerwin,

In 1 Cor 15, Paul answers these questions: How will the dead be raised?  With what kind of body will they come?

His answer is:  With a spiritual body, which will replace the natural, fleshy body that died.

    Mike,

He does state that not all flesh is the same in 1 Corinthians 15:39 and yet he does not mention flesh in 1 Corinthians 15:44-46. Instead we are taught the first man is earthly and the last man is from heaven and that the first Adam became a living soul and the last man a quickening spirit. Neither the soul or spirit are flesh, which is made of this corrupted earth.

Is all flesh made of corrupted earth or are there different types of flesh?

    T8,

The literal word interpreted as “natural” is soulish. So there is a soulish body, which you claim is dead without the Spirit; and there is a Spiritual body, that lives because of the Spirit.

    Hi T8,

I like that – can I use it?
    What's the third part?

And the Spirit is dead without God?
And the spirit has no life without God?

That is not a literal translation as soulish body is the one that is buried.

I have never heard of any such thing as a “soulish body”, Kerwin.  Could you explain what it is you're talking about?

    Mike,

Just something I learned when looking at the ancient Greek behind the English translations.

    Helps Wordstudies:

    Quote
5591 psyxikós (an adjective, derived from 5590 /psyxḗ, “soul, natural identity”) – properly, soulish, i.e. what is natural, as it relates to physical (tangible) life alone (i.e. apart from God's inworking of faith).

It appears certain experts believe soulish is an idiom that means natural.  It is only used in 1  Corinthians 44 & 46.

I suspicion it is in reference to the soul of the body being in the blood.

Deuteronomy 12:23,  Leviticus 17:11, and maybe others though translators seem to prefer translating it to life.

    K

    what have you learn ???

    T,

The soul gives life to the mortal body.

    K

you mean MOTION but it is the soul that his the live and the being ,right ???

    T,

Many translators believe soul is an idiom for life in certain verses and translate it accordingly.

Souls are said to move, but my knowledge is limited if it is under their own power or not. Or whether or not it is a false belief.

    Mike,

He does state that not all flesh is the same in 1 Corinthians 15:39…………..

    Kerwin,

    This shouldn't be that hard.

    1.  Does Paul say that the original body is flesh, and the resurrected body will be A DIFFERENT KIND OF FLESH?

    OR…………..

    2.  Does Paul say that the original body is flesh, and the resurrected body will be SPIRITUAL, “as are those of heaven”?

Do you see how Paul uses “spiritual” as an ANTONYM of “natural”?

Also, in vv 39-40, do you see how Paul speaks of the different kinds of flesh bodies ON THIS PLANET, and then says, “There are also heavenly bodies”?

The teaching is that the earthly bodies are made up of FLESH:  One kind for people, one kind for birds, one kind for fish, etc.  THEN, AS AN ASIDE FROM THAT TEACHING, he further goes on to teach that ALL of these FLESH bodies are different still from the bodies in heaven.

Kerwin, do you have scriptural evidence of some “heavenly” kind of flesh?

The simple answer to your question is:  YES.  All flesh that we know of is made from the earth.  There is no mention of any heavenly flesh, nor is it ever said that spirit beings have flesh bodies.

    Yes Ed,

6:2 refers to angels. We are taught that angels can sometimes be seen by humans, can impregnate human women, and can eat human food.

Which part of that tells us spirit beings have flesh of any kind?

T8………The body is a Soul (a complete person) it is just dead without Spirit of Life in it . God made the man complete and Jump started him with the breath of AIR for OXYGEN to be infuses into his blood and cause him to Live, the then became a “LIVING SOUL” instead of a dead one.

The words “Living Soul” simply implies the complete “being”. With a Body and Spirit (INTELLECT) in it God can remove the Spirit and discard the Body forever, and we would never live again as a Living Soul. If he leaves us in the Grave without a resurrection we simple would never again exist, So God can indeed destory both Body and Soul in the grave. Spirits outside of a body are adrift having no form or substance of any kind .

Trying to present Spirit as any kind of BODY is wrong, Spirit are not BODIES they are what is “in” Bodies. IMO

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.

Gene, are these souls men with their bodies who are waiting for their fellow servants? If so, are their bodies not in the grave anymore?

How do you see this verse? Actually if you reply in the appropriate topic and then link to it from here, that would be better.

    Mike,

It is a adjective whose root is the Ancient Greek word translated “soul”.

The root word is “psuche” which you know is soul.

So soulish is supposed to be a synonym of fleshly and yet an adjective form of soul is used and not the adjective form of flesh.  It seems Paul was comparing and contrasting spirit and soul and not spirit and flesh.

    Merriam-Websters states this:
