I don't know of the official figures, but it sure feels like there are many more big quakes now than there have ever been in my lifetime at least. 2011 was an outstanding year for quakes. Japan, Chile, NZ.

Actually I saw an impressive demonstration when I was exactly on the equator in Ecuador a number of years ago.Water went down the plug with no direction.
