Quote (bodhitharta @ Dec. 19 2011,13:46) If someone lost a debate and changed the content they were using to defend themselves it would seem to me that the person was learning.
No, he is learning to be deceitful. It is likely that the person hasn't changed and would take a different tact to the same argument. An honest person would say, “I learned something and I was wrong”. And how helpful that would be for all who read it.Such honestly is in short supply here it seems.
December 19, 2011 at 5:17 am#268381bodhithartaParticipantQuote (t8 @ Dec. 19 2011,13:58) bod, a person who can edit his post has no advantage regarding his argument, testimony, and message. The only advantage is less spelling errors or better grammar if the feature is used legitimately. If a person edits their post after people have replied to it, you have the right to ask what exactly they changed. If a person is found abusing this feature, then they can be reported and will lose that privileged.
Believe me when I say that I wish all could have this feature, but it would be abused and require too much work to administer. And knowing full well how some disgruntled people come here, it would be a given that it would be abused.
e.g., a member who lost a debate could then potentially delete all content from all their posts. I am simply trying to avoid such things and understand as a moderator why God sometimes limits people as well.
Hi T8If someone deletes all their posts it is not to the benefit of their argument or position in-fact it gives them the opportunity to completely makeover their image and perhaps help them convert into a stronger position of belief.
Why would you need to hold say someone like STU to a statement that he may want to evolve into a statement that is more suitable to some growth he has achieved? You are saying “let's hold STU to what he believed in 2009 or 2010 or even NOV 2011 I would rather STU could eliminate anything whatsoever he wished if it was for the betterment of his soul.
No one can abuse the TRUTH they can only abuse themselves

So are you for a dialogue/debate based on having advantages over your opponent?
What advantage do I have? I used to preview every post to check spelling and grammar before I submitted it. The only difference now that I have editing rights is that sometimes I'm lazy, and hit “Submit Post” before checking.Which is kind of stupid of me, because I almost always have to edit spelling and/or grammar after the fact anyway. If I was smart, I'd just keep doing it the way I always had in the past.
But the only choices I have are: Edit before posting. Edit after posting. I don't really see any “advantage” to a debate in those choices.

Asana,If you made a post saying, “Jesus never actually died”. And then many people responded to it saying, “Oh yes he did!”.
And then you later edit your post to delete the words “Jesus never actually died”, the following posts from us will no longer make any sense.
Especially if you edited it to say “I now believe Jesus DID actually die”. Now our “Oh yes he did!” posts make us seem like crazy people.
(Okay, maybe that's not the best example, but I'm not going back to change it. I'm sure you get my point, even if you don't agree with it.)
(Btw, I previewed this post, corrected one spelling error, and then submitted it.)

Bod, there is some truth to what you are saying. But these forums have another use. That is that people can read the conversation and debates. If they were to read where a person said that there original case was wrong, then that would have use to the reader and would mean that the progression would be useful for all time (so to speak).
If all had editing rights, then that gives too much rights to deceitful people and knowing human nature, some would spend much time editing their posts so that conversations would be rendered useless.
Think of it like the Book of Life. Should we be able to reverse time and delete or rewrite pages in that book?
Is it not better to start of wrong and then learn the truth than start of wrong and hide that fact.
In addition to that, we are essentially avatars here, and if an avatar is wrong, then it is not like your neigbours will know about it.Also, imagine if you said to a person that you believed they were wrong, and then that person changed their post to the truth. Now it appears that you are wrong and now you have to edit your post to make some sense.
In short, it is an administrative nightmare.
Much easier and honest to leave it the way it is and with less admin costs, it can continue to be a free service.

People edit the book of life every day when they repent and God says when that Happens HE will forgive and remember no more your sinsDecember 20, 2011 at 7:18 am#268503shimmerParticipantt8, I can certainly understand your problem with edit. However, how can you truly trust someone who has edit? People can change at any moment.
So is there any way you can allow edit for everyone, but only limit it to a certain ammount of time (per post)? – say a couple of hours.

I have to say Shimmerthat idea is brilliant if it can be doneAnd if not someone should invent how that can be done, you could call it “Timed Editing” feature. Absolutely brillian Shimmer

One site I went to has a five minute window. And even within the five minutes, it will not post the edited version until you fill out the “Why I edited” section, explaining what was edited, and why.I'm okay with that, if t8 can do it. But then again, I'm okay with no editing rights at all. I never asked for them. They came as a “gift” when I became moderator.

We are to CONFESS our sins and repent of them. Editing our book of life would make it tempting to pretend we never had any sin to repent of. I know there's some crap I'd like to edit out of my book of life if I could. But the more I think about it, I love the five or ten minute window idea. What do you say, t8? Could you even do it if you wanted to?

You cannot edit any page in the Book of Life, you can only write new pages which can show that you have changed and repented from the previous pages. Is it not written that some will receive reward 30, 60, or 100 fold, and yet some will receive no reward but will still be saved.
Can a man have all the pages changed to show good works everyday of your life when in actual fact you may have only done so later in life or not at all.

Actually the best idea I have seen is that editing stops the moment someone makes a post after yours. I think that is the fairest system of all because you are not making any changes based on future posts by others.Such features are not built into this forum and the best way to implement them is to move the forum to another system. This is technically difficult and can lead to loss of some features like PMs.
The best way forward I have seen to date was this package that did everything and more, and offered a conversion tool. However it was also very expensive and required a monthly payment.
I am still looking around and if I find a good package either free or reasonably priced, and if it offers a conversion tool, then I am happy to give it a go.

t8is not the book of live ,the works of our own doing ?and if we are to edit it it has to be done during our live time because the written words are stopped at our dead ,and their are evaluated worthy or not to live,(resurrection)
