Free will is the choice among the influences.
God’s Spirit influences mankind as does the flesh. God enables you to choose despite desires and influences.

Ed JEdj…..Where have I ever said we don’t have freedom to excerise our Wills’ at? I am talking about the Will “itself”. I don’t want to move on, until you tell me you do understand that. OK because it is nothing but a waste of time, for me to keep repeating over and over the same things and it goes right over your heads.
You very own video , you or proclaimer posted, explained it very well. If you don’t understand that , how is me going over and over the same thing going to help?

Proclaimer, God’s Spirit does more then just give you an option , it completely changes your thinking. “I will take out of them the stony heart and give them a heart of flesh (soft heart) , I will write my laws in their inward parts” , I think that is more then just give you an option.

Yes of course. But there is still the battle between the spirit and flesh is there not?
And this is one example of free will. The flesh influencing you vs the Spirit leading a person with a renewed mind.

Lol. So you are now espousing a doctrine called Free Captivated Will.
Do you have free captivated will?
Isn’t that a bit like saying the hot cold water. Or the good bad person. Or maybe the best worse sportsperson.
On a side note, if your mind is in captivity then freely choose to read the scriptures which can renew your mind. The truth can set you free Gene. But you must love the truth.

Proclaimer, the video you guys posted earlier is exactly right, and it completely disagrees with both you and Edj. They were actual scientific studies, not some fluke trying to push your “freewill” theories for you.
There existes no one Will that is “free” period, or it simply would not be called a WILL in the first place. A WILL, is a “desire”, and all desires are “CAUSED” buy something. COMMON SENSE 101.
So if it were caused , then it certainly is not “itself” free, now is it? COMMON SENSE 101.
Now again for the hundredth time, do we have freedom to “EXCERCISE” OUR “driven” wills held “captive” by our thoughts, which drives our desires, YES WE DO?
A sexual pervert, driven by the thoughts of his or her mind can commit perverted acts. A drug additc can do drugs, all “caused” by their minds being held “captive”, nothing “free about it at all.
Again Common sense 101. The term “FREEWILL”, is an OXYMORON, because no such thing exists.

Gene, have you never heard the word will used like this?

It is my will to not drink alcohol again.
So yes these are desires. But they are not always followed through.
Because you can choose between the options.
For example. I desire to serve God like no other man before me. My flesh desires all kinds of things too that are contrary to this other desire. You argue that the stronger desire always wins so it is deterministic. Not so Gene.
For example. When I turned to God, I was a sinful man. I actually didn’t want to believe in God because I didn’t want to give up my sinful life. But I knew deep down that I would regret this because the time would come when my life was over and that was inevitable. This was not a desire, it was a knowledge of how the future would be and the regret I would have. I was through God’s help able to follow through and follow God and give up my sinful lifestyle.
One was desire, the other was knowledge.
We are not like beasts Gene. They are propelled constantly by the strongest desire. God gave man reason. We can choose God or decide to fulfil the desires of the flesh.
We have free will because we have the choice between pressing desires or to be patient and work for God and receive reward after this life. The former is easy and going by your doctrine, every man would do that because the desire is stronger in that moment.
Free will as most people think of it is an illusion. I’m trying to think it isn’t but I don’t seem free to do that.
David, you are right , because there exists no such thing as a will that is free “itself”, God has given us freedom to express our “captivated” wills, will’s that are held captive by our thoughts which causes us to will , rather good or evil, everything is the result of “cause and effect”. We are caused to will things, by what is working in our minds. That is exactly how we are changed by God, just as it says, ” for he “works” in us “BOTH” TO WILL and do of “HIS” GOOD PLEASURE.”
FREEWILLERS , do not believe that scripture! Because they want all the Glory of a “self” salvation, which comes from their oun “will”s.
