Because it does give the idea that the heavens and earth did already exist at the time of the beginning of this creation on earth. You also should consider the the words “in the beginning” may only be this present creation we now live in , that may not include other earth beginnings that have taken place before. Does not scripture say, that God will once again make, ” all thing new” , a new heaven and earth.

But the final nail in the coffin for the gap theory is the Sabbath (Ex 31:17). The Israelite Sabbath is derived DIRECTLY from the fact that God created the heaven, the earth, and everything in them in six days, and then rested on the seventh. If these weren’t literal 24 hour days, then there is no reason whatsoever for the Sabbath to fall on the seventh literal 24 hour day. In fact, that God created in six literal days and rested on the seventh is the reason there is such a thing as a “week”.
Most of the Christian Apologists depend on this so called gap theory to prove that the Biblical creation story (The Priestly writer’s) can accommodate 14 billions years as claimed by the Modern Scientific evolution theory.

The next verses follow after the word ‘now’. In other words, when the planet was in darkness and covered in water.
What is the point in listening to the gap theory or ignoring it when all you have to do is read the text yourself.
Verse 1 already has the heavens and earth existing. It is not a title, it is a statement.
In conclusion I can see that not many are able to think for themselves, but rather prefer opinions and back the one that suits their bias. Many have a theory and will stick to it despite the facts. I am not sure what the point of acting like that is. But let the dishonest be dishonest and the honest be honest. Then let us all stand before God to give an account for our own life.
We must all stand before Christ to be judged. Everyone will get what they should. They will be paid for whatever they did—good or bad—when they lived in this earthly body.
Mike……Something to consider, remember it says ” in “The” beginning’ , right , so the “definite article (the) ” indicates a “particular”, beginning, ” not necessarily specific to the “only” beginning of things on this earth, but a new “kind” of beginning, remember God destroyed this earth once after that beginning with water again , which he covered the entire earth with, and then made the dry land reappear again, in the days of Noah. What if God did the same thing many times with this earth, and each time started a new creation of things on it. We have proof of things existing thousands if not millions of years before mankind as we know it today, ever existed on this earth. , how long does it take a tree or fish , to petrify and turn into rock? , you said you understood radiocarbon dating, then they place things in existence over 50 thousands of years ago on this earth. And newer discoveries are being made still, with Micron DNA AND GENOME discoveries .
Bottom line, recently there is a lot of new discoveries that “true science” is finding out today. Most point to the earth and our solar system being way older the we first imagined, and pointing to a creator as first cause. Science is becoming more and more convinced there was a designer and our creation was indeed a causal event.

Adam……You must remember that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. God the Father knows we need to rest every so often to recharge so to speak, so he gave us commandments to do that for ourselves. But rather or how we do it is up to us, As far a Saturday being the Commanded Sabbath goes , it doesn’t say the, it just say “six days you shall work and the seventh day rest, the seventh day in one persons case may be Sunday, Monday , Tuesday or any day of the week , and even if you don’t do it , you just denying yourself of rest , Jesus and God the Father both were working on the. Sabbath day , if you believe what Jesus said .

When we rest on the seventh day, we are supposed to understand that God created our world in 6 days and rested on the Seventh day and set apart that day and sanctified it for man ( the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath)

With respect to scripture, only Jesus and Lucifer are called Morning Star, and not to complicate things, I took it for granted that there are no more morning stars, at least in respect of the particular case and moment in time of the creation of the earth. Now in that particular moment in time, definitely Jesus was not yet in existence as a being for the heavenly realms, but for sure He was within all the creatures then created since ALL IN/BY HIM. Thus, Lucifer was definitely present as the only morning star when the earth was created, also he was the one and only carrier of the light, and the first-ever creature, THE BEGINNING, created by “THE WORD” Jesus, according to John1:1, precisely as a spirit within Lucifer’s heart, as his life source. Yes brother Gene, the God mentioned in the creation stories of Genesis 1 & 2 was very much humanly that he needed to rest on a particular day. I also appreciate Jesus who was rational on following this Sabbath day as per the Gospel stories. But I am neutral on following the weekly rest whether it is on Saturday, Sunday or any other day in a week as our Labour Laws and Workmen’s statutory rules permit us to rest any one day in a weeks time.

You: God was in all the prophets also , he spoke through them, does that make them God’s also? Scripture say this, ” That God may be in all and through all”. So does that make all a God? , no of course not, there is “ONLY ONE GOD”, that works is In all and through all, it not the man Jesus .
