If someone is a firstborn, obviously there was someone in existence who gave birth to the firstborn. In a similar matter, if someone gave birth to their firstborn, that firstborn had to exist beforehand. Your passage in Col 1 actually doesn’t dismiss an eternal existence at all. The word ‘firstborn’ does not mean first created.
If you understood the Son as eternal also it would help you lay a firm foundation as you study.
