The master was praising his practicality and wisdom. He was also making the point that the people of “the world” are sometimes wiser in a practical way than we are. He was showing us a good example of why its important to be shrewd and prudent when necessary, especially when concerning our worldly possesions.

Tithing ended with the mosaic law…There is no 10 percent..there is only giving from the heart..remember the widows mite?…Mandatory tithing based on certain amounts is used by greedy preachers to fleece their flock…simple as that
