we are all sinners but some believe that they do not need to be saved,those are like the Pharisees, Sadducee,and the doctors of the law,even today religion leaders figure that they are saved by their own way of believe ,

so yes you need a pure heart to be saved only people with a pure heart know very well that they are sinners and have be saved

yes it is dated from Moses on his return from the Sinai with tablets

you should read the first of those commandment
