June 3, 2012 at 12:05 pm#300658ProclaimerParticipantThe best way to judge a man's writings is to read his writings. I am sure that if I was worthy enough for others to write about me, that people would seriously misconstrue what I said. I know that because it happens here and I have been accused of teaching all kinds of things which I never intended for people think such things. Not to mention being cut off, meaning it is hard to give a full context due to the inability for many to listen.
That said, we are also a product of our culture and Origen was influenced by his culture just as I am by the New Zealand culture. In addition, we are allowed to speculate so long as you call it that. This is often the way in which we search out things.
Further, I think that Origen understood more truth than most, and that he probably understood things because he was passionate in his search. Sometimes this passion can lead to going too far with ideas, but if he is guilty of that, then that demonstrates that he was a human being.
Finally, I think people who judge him and others harshly rather than point out where he erred in his actual writings, are not being wise in this matter. Because I know that if I had a mean spirit, I could condemn all who came before me easily because we are all imperfect and it is not hard to see other people's weaknesses. I also know that the hardest thing to see is ourselves. Thus men often point out and hate the same thing they themselves do for some reason. I have noticed this quite a bit in life, from people who are quick to judge others.
That is what I think. I consider Origen as a likely brother in the faith. Although as I said before, without actually knowing the man, you cannot say this or other things for sure. He may be someone completely different to what is portrayed in his writings. I think his writings show a man who loves God and has deep understanding of things, after you peel back cultural influences etc. Although even cultural influences are not all bad. After all, the word logos is a Greek word. Do we need to understand what logos meant to the Greeks in order to understand its use in scripture? And was John influenced by Greek thought with John 1:1? And is it bad to demonstrate God's truth by using one's cultural understanding to frame the truth?

Nyou are so wrong ,
THE FIRST OF GOD COMMANDMENTS STARTS LIKE THIS ; YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND SOUL
THE GIFT OF GOD GRACE “HIS LOVE” FROM GOD ,WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WOULD GIVE IN RETURN? I RETURN MY LOVE TO HIM WITH ALL MY HEART ,
THE FIRST THING ANYONE SHOULD DO WEN SOMEONE GIVE YOU SIGNS OF LOVE HIS TO RETURN THAT LOVE

Nick……….Loving GOD is not a way to Salvation? Where on earth did you get that from? Surely not from Jesus, Who said the greatest commandment was to love the Lord our GOD with all our hearts and all our Might.Nick you need to explain what you are saying and meanings not just make a blanket statement about something brother. That way we can get you meaning of what you are saying , Surely you know it is GOD alone who is our SAVIOR no matter who he does it through.
Deu 7:9…..> Know therefore that the LORD thy GOD, he is God, the faithful God, which keeps covenant and mercy with them that “LOVE” him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.

Nyou do not have to be a Jew to love God,
and not all that says lord ,lord are Christ servants and so do not Love him that give his live for their sins ,
only the ones that LOVE GOD AND CHRIST HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON ,THAT CAME FROM THE FATHER AND GIVE HIS LIVE TO SAVE MEN FROM SIN,ARE THE TRUE BELIEVERS ,
SO YOU LOOKS LIKE ARE NOT PART OF THOSE WHO LOVE GOD AND HIS SON ,
this is your choice not mine ,so we are not brothers for that reason .

Origen should not be followed.
Nwho's talking to follow man
do you subjest to follow Paul or Peter, or John ??
this would be very wrong ,
as Christians we should only have one teacher that is Christ and his father ,
but this does not mean we can not read Peters ,Paul ,John's or Origen, written comments about Christ or God's word,
