    Exodus 20:3
“You shall have no other gods before me.

    Deut 5:7
“You shall have no other gods before me.

It is clear here that the OT states we are not to worship other gods or place them before God.  But the inference here also is that there are indeed other gods.  If not, why not simply state there are no other gods or you shall have no other gods.  Instead it says you will have none “before” me.

    Exodus 34:14
Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

If these other gods are imaginary creations of man what is there to be jealous about?

    Judges 11:24
Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the LORD our God has given us, we will possess.

    1 Kings 11:33
I will do this because they have forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molech the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in my ways, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my statutes and laws as David, Solomon's father, did.

Chemosh is called a god in two different books, not a king or priest or demon or Satan but a god.

    Exodus 15:11
“Who among the gods is like you, O LORD ? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

If these gods are imaginary beings then this verse is no true praise.

    Exodus 18:11
Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.”

It certainly sounds like the author believed these gods to be real otherwise again the praise is weak and largely meaningless.

    Deuteronomy 4:7
What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him?

    2 Chronicles 2:5
“The temple I am going to build will be great, because our God is greater than all other gods.

    Psalm 86:8
Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours

Again it appears the meaning is the Lord is greater then the other gods not that they don't exist.

    Psalm 96:4
For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods

    Why would we fear nothing?

    Psalm 136:2
Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.

    Psalm 95:3
For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods

    Deuteronomy 10:17
For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.

    Daniel 11:36
[ The King Who Exalts Himself ] “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods.

God of gods, king of gods, if all gods are just imagination then these appellations mean nothing.

While I acknowledge there are many places that do claim there are false gods and created non-gods or just empty idols they don't go so far as to say there are no such things as gods themselves.

    Hi C,
Jesus quoted scripture showing men are called gods.
He told the Jews the Father was the one they called God.
So the word itself does not always refer to the Father God.

Jesus preferred to call our God 'Father' and so should we who are one with him when in prayer.

    Nick,

I think you missed the whole point here.  What I am speculating on is whether the Bible gives support to the concept of beings called therein gods (note the small g), who are not human, angels or demons.  I think the references I gave point that Biblical authors evidently did lean in that direction.  If not, then many of the scriptures I quoted would not make much sense.  If their are no gods or it simply means humans of a type, then the title God of gods seems a little empty does it not?

    Hi C,
    Exactly.
Scripture speaks of many as gods.
Trinity theorists use it only when it applies to the ones they want to amalgamate.

But 1Cor 8 clarifies it for US.

Cato……….the Hebrew word for God is Elohim and simply means (POWERS) and can apply to anyone whom has been given power, but the point is that to us there is Only (ONE) TRUE POWER, (GOD). “Hear O Israel the LORD (HE EXISTS) our GOD (with POWER) is ONE LORD”. The word GOD simply means (POWERS) and these POWERS represent the (US) referenced to in Genesis. We are told there are seven Spirits of GOD or Powers composing (ONE) GOD. Trinitarians try to make the (US) say Jesus, but that is just forcing the text , because it does not say Jesus. But the trinitarians have no problem forcing biblical texts to make it mean what they want. IMO

Peace and love to you and yours………………..gene
