Mat 10:28 And be not afraid of them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
To me this scripture is clear. The body man can kill but the soul only God can “destroy”. If God can destroy the soul and chooses not to; instead having pleasure in watching one of his, no matter how bad, burn and suffer forever and ever. Would you do that? Oops! Sorry I couldn't help myself. I just couldn't conceive God my Father doing that!
My thoughts are the soul is the “inward man”:
Rom.7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
2Co 4:16 Wherefore we faint not; but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.
Eph 3:16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that ye may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;
While I believe in the inner man I don't believe the soul is immortal. The soul that sins will die:
Eze 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Jam 5:20 let him know, that he who converteth a sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins.
1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, (if you die you cannot have an immortal soul) so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Death (of the soul) or eternal life after judgement (Heb. 9:27).
