This article about a study done of sloth bathroom habits does not actually answer the question why only go poo every three weeks. It does give evidence they benefit from the practice. How significantly seems to be open to debate.

A sloth probably sees a slow moving human the way we see a bee buzzing from flower to flower as a blur that our eyes can't keep up with.
Nature is truly amazing, and undeniably points to a truly magnificent and awe-inspiring Creator.

While kayaking with a group through a flooded part of the forest, we saw a sloth. One of the guys, controversially, picked it up off its tree branch and threw it into the water. I thought 'what the…', but then the sloth started swimming in slow motion. I couldn't believe that he could stay afloat at that speed and he returned to the same tree if I remember rightly.

I've seen sloths swim on nature programs. But I've never actually seen a sloth with my own eyes.I imagine they're pretty stinky, since algae and other things grow right on them.
Someone needs to tell those pokey sons of guns that moss don't grow on a rolling stone.
