Quote Jack's dilemma is: whether to expose the charade or not expose it.
I just want to make sure the pastor gets the money that the donors intended for him. I am disinclined to openly expose people unnecessarily. This Sunday I will be listening to the discussion closely and if I sense that the congregation does not want to “forgive” the so called loan and will not vote for it, then I will have no choice but to tell all.In the final meeting between the pastor and the board there were some denominational heads present. At MY SUGGESTION the the donors told the denominational heads about the gift and that it was not a “loan.” The donors told the denominationall heads about it shortly before that final meeting. Now all of a sudden the board recommends that the congregation “forgive” the while amount even when the pastor had paid half of it back. I have just found out that in that meeting the treasurer was put in the hot seat by one of the board members about some things he withheld from the board. So things arte getting corrected. I am just surprised that the board is recommending that we “forgive” the amount when they should have given the $7,500.00 back to the pastor without the congregation being the wiser about it. I am wondering if they cannot do this because the donation was recorded as a gift to the church and they have to “forgive” it for their book keeping. Anyway, I have decided that if the congregation is going to vote to “forgive” the amount evenn though i hhate the term “forgive” i will keep quiet.
But if I see the congregation is not going to “forgive” the amount, then i will not be quiet but will inform them that the amounnt was intended a a free gift by the donnors and that the treasurer acted on his own. i can't accuse the whole board because i do not have enough facts. There is another law that applies which is, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” If I accuse the whole board without facts, then I am guilty myself.

March 2, 2011 at 10:20 am#237797kerwinParticipantKangaroo Jack,
If you see a good you can do and do not do it then you sin.
In this case you would be reporting what you heard and that is considered hearsay testimony.
The people who have the standing in this case are the parties that made the deals in the first place. From what you state the couple donating the money had a deal with board and the board did not keep their end of the deal either through poor practices or intent. If that is what happened then that is on the heads of those involverd.
The best you can do is to say you heard from a couple that wish to remain anomynous is that the so called loan was actually a gift from them to the pasteur to passed through the council that became a loan on the books. Even to do that you should have permision from the couple who may instead choose to keep things quiet for their own reason.
The pasteor signed an agreement with the representatives of the Congregation but I feel the Congregation should know all relevant facts before voting. The ones to make the decision is those whom donated the money in the first place if the council does not do so first.

The congregation does not know that the pastor has paid back half the money. The donors told me this before they left the church. The board is recommending that the whole $15,000.00 be “forgiven.” This means that if the congregation votes to “forgive” it the board would have to give the $7,500.00 back to the pastor if they have not already.I have learned that one of the denominational heads whom the donors informed about their gift will be presiding over the meeting. So everything should go well.
The donors have left the church. But they are still official members and so I will be emailing the them today and will be asking them to attend the meeting to vote. If they attend and things don't go right it will be on THEIR shoulders to speak up.

JackWhen someone gives an “anonymous” gift of that size it can only be “anonymous” to some degree because of tax laws.
You mentioned you gave a huge gift to someone who then wrote a check for the amount to another.
Did the other pay taxs on it and did you claim it as a right off?
Someones name has to be attached to the gift for tax purposes and that is the law.
Any individual deposit or wthdrawel to or from a checking account over $10,000.00 is reported automatically to the IRS. But I am not sure about 501©(3) organiations and if the Banks report them also.

Many people consider it no big deal to cheat on their taxes. They apparently consider it a victimless crime. And many of those consider themselves “Christian”.
