Ed;The rebirth by the Spirit would not occur until Jesus raised from the dead. Jesus was therefore teaching John's immersion, and pledge of a clear conscious before God. A teaching that any Jewish teacher; such as Nicodemus; should know.
It is a model of the immersion in water to come which is why Paul re-immersed those disciples of John that did not know the Holy Spirit.
Acts 19
King James Version (KJV)1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.May 16, 2012 at 2:27 pm#298364terrariccaParticipant1PE 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
1PE 3:19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
1PE 3:20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.
1PE 3:21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you— not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
1PE 3:22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to HimMay 16, 2012 at 5:44 pm#298371kerwinParticipantT;

1PE 3:19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
1PE 3:20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.and that it saves believers because of:

T;I brought up that passage because it states “wash away thy sins”. It also parallels the Ethiopian Eunuch who said:
Acts 8
King James Version (KJV)36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
Ananias and the Ethiopian Eunuch were clearly speaking of the same immersion; the immersion in water for the forgiveness of sins. It it is done to cleanse the spirit by the power of God; not the skin.
