BlockedWhy don't they just have windows in their homes? My parent's sitting room is lighted by a 12″ circular skylight.
Why not take those plastic bottles, melt them into sheets, and construct a simple plastic window to light their home?

ParticipantI think the bottle and what it contains magnifies or concentrates light, essentially making it a light as opposed to just a window or usual skylight.
I wonder if it could be a fire risk, like a magnifying glass? Also, a window might pose a security risk as it would be big enough for a person to break and enter the premises. Windows are probably too expensive for many in the third world too. The video said that each bottle cost $1 to install. I couldn't imagine a window being that cheap.

ParticipantFrom the video it did seem to magnify the light.
A pretty neat low tech solution to a lighting problem. The PET material from which the bottles are produced will eventually degrade from ultra violet light and become brittle,
but replacement is only one dollar.Tim

ParticipantIt was mentioned the reason the houses were kept dark was due to the heat from the sun, a window would be more solar. I find the idea to be most genius. A simple yet effective invention.
Quote How well do they work at night? Most likely a night light.

As well as the surrounding brick I imagine.
A full moon might give some light which might actually be a little annoying in a bedroom.
A house in the video appeared to have an electric light, but keeping them on all day is too expensive.September 10, 2011 at 11:40 am#258021Proclaimer
