I see it like Dennison does.What else would “pass away” mean? This is how NETBible translates it in Rev 21:1,
Rev 21:1 NET
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, and the sea existed no more.Their footnote after “ceased to exist” says,
For the translation of ἀπέρχομαι (apercomai; here ἀπῆλθαν [aphlqan]) L&N 13.93 has “to go out of existence – ‘to cease to exist, to pass away, to cease.’”
And the Greek acutally says “the first heaven and the first earth had departed, and the seas did not exist anymore”.
Sounds like there will be a NEW earth to me, for no matter how you understand “departed” or “passed away”, it definitely says the seas will cease to “EXIST”.

Hi Mike,Word studies are essential when studying “The Word” of God!
Elements should have been translated rudiments; the rudiments are what get burned up!2Peter 3:10 But “the day of the Lord” will come as a thief in the night;
in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise,
and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth
also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.Elements: Greek #4747 στοιχεῖον (stoicheion) stoy-khi'-on:
the elements of knowledge , principally: Rudiments.
What gets 'burned up' is the 'rudiments'! (2Peter 3:10)
Rudiments: an arrangement unable to perform it's normal function,
a fundamental skill, something uniformed. (Gen.2:17)Col.2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy
and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Col:2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world,
why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,Ed J (Daniel 11:18 / Luke 18:7-8)

If the earth is made of rudiments or elements, and they all dissove……………where does that leave the earth?
And you didn't address the fact that the “seas will cease to exist”.

So you equate the word “waters” being used for “people” with the “seas” that will “cease to exist”.
I don't see it that way, but I also don't see how it changes what we need to do to be saved, so can we just agree to disagree on this one?
As I continue my daily Bible reading, maybe a scripture will shed some new light for me. And if it does, I will share it with you and all.

Ed, how do you discount all the other words in 2nd Peter and base what you are saying on one word change ? And what comes like a thief in the night, from east to west ? Isnt it the sun ? Not that Jesus is the sun, but even in Revelations a messenger is seen on the sun. “And I saw one messenger standing in the sun, and he cried, a great voice, saying to all the birds that are flying in mid-heaven, 'Come and be gathered together to the supper of the great God” What is the supper ? And what did Jesus say of his coming? “wherever the carcase may be, there shall the eagles be gathered together”October 24, 2010 at 5:35 pm#221184Ed JParticipantQuote (mikeboll64 @ Oct. 24 2010,16:34) Hi Ed, So you equate the word “waters” being used for “people” with the “seas” that will “cease to exist”.

Hi Mike,It is the confusion (in people) that ceases to exist not people themselves.
Zerubbabel means: Coming out of confusion(removing)!
Zech.4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this (Spiritual) house;
his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.God bless

HI Shimmer,Did you read Col.2:8 and Col.2;20? It is talking about the rudiments that get burned up in 2Peter 3! Didn't you know?
The word “New” in both Rev.12:1 and 2 Peter 3:13 should have been translated “RENEW”
Greek #2537 καινός (kainos) kähē-nôs': new (freshness ith respect to age), youthful, fresh, regenerate:-new, young[καινός] should have been translated as “renewed” like [ἀνακαινόω] from 303 and 2537
Greek #341 ἀνακαινόω (anakainoó) ăn-äk-ähē-nô'-ō: to rejuvenate:-renew2Cor.4:16 For which cause we faint not;
but though our outward man perish,
yet the inward man is renewed day by day.[καινός] is also used in Rom.6:4 and Rom.7:6 as well…
Rom.6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness(καινός) of life.Rom.7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held;
that we should serve in newness(καινός) of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.God bless
