    Hi KW,

Marriage involves a public [wedding] ceremony indicating commitment.

    Hi KW,

    Dt 24.1

‘When a man takes a wife

    AND

    marries her…”

    Two separate things.

    Nick,

They most likely had such ceremonies even though they are not recorded.

Rebekah and Issac were married even though God chose not to put the ceremony in Scripture. All I know when he states someone took a wife it means he got married.

    Nick,

    Deuteronomy 22:13

    King James Bible
If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

    Holman Christian Standard Bible
If a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and comes to hate her,

    Hi KW,

You offer two different translations as if to confirm the manuscript words used mean the same?

    Nick,

I offer because they are paraphrases of one another.

    Nick,

As I said before I have trouble believing you are sincere on this matter.

You clearly do not believe Scripture or the meaning of the words in English.

I have already presented proof and you have given no reason except empty talk for not believing.

    dictionary.com

    Idioms
    4.
take to wife, to marry (a particular woman):
He took an heiress to wife.

I already pointed out two places where this is how the Phrase “take a wife” is used in Scripture and that translators chose to translate the words of the same passage as 1) take a wife 2) marry.

You speak English and I find it difficult to believe you do not know the idiom.

    hi KW,

Are you a man of the Word or of the dictionary?

    Nick,

The bible is written in English. You know Paul taught us it is better a few words with understanding than multitude that are understood.

The bottom line is the phrase “they took wives of them” means they married the women of the group them just like Abraham did not want Isaac to marry a woman of thee Canaanites.

    Hi KW,

The word MARRY does not occur in scripture till much later in genesis.

You always seem to be standing on thin scriptural ice.

To thin to build your own ideas onto.

    Nick,

I see you are playing word games.

I already quoted a passage of Scripture from the OT where some translations use the word marriage. So why do you choose to toss their choice out?

Genesis 34:9Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

If I keep quoting then you will have toss them all out as they will all disagree with you.

    Nick,

The Scripture Jesus addresses comes from Deuteronomy 25:5 and it was a practice of Judah even before the Law of Moses. See Genesis 38:8.

    Nick,

So you claim that because the literal word marriage is not in Scripture earlier the later chapters of Genesis thus their was no marriages even though the phrase “took a wife” means marriage and that does exist.

    Hi KW,

Marriage is just taking a wife??

    Ask your wife.

Kerwin…….Haven’t you notice how Nick has completely changed from the topic you posted about, let him produce the proof that angels are spirits. He cant produce any scripture that say that, so he leads you away from what you started this thread about, a cleaver way to not be forced to present any scriptures that backs up his false teachings. IMO

peace and love to you and yours…………………….gene

    Hi GB,

You boast of your so called knowledge but you do not know whence you obtained it.

You know it is not from scripture so it does not have any divine blessing.

But rather than taking stock you take aim at the messengers

    Gene,

The conversation has wandered away from the initial topic but I have nothing new to add to it and Nick does not seem to know Scripture enough to add any other insights.

The current conversation sounds rather absurd but perhaps Nick is attempting to accept Scripture does not agree with the traditions he has embraced.

    What do you disagree with?

    Nick,

I am unmarried but the phrase “take a wife” does mean get married. The English idiom may actually have originated in the same phrase from Scripture as the understanding of the Bible has a large influence on the English language.

According to dictionary.com the phrase means.

to receive or accept into a relationship with oneself: to take a wife

The relationship between a husband and wife is called marriage.

One of my sister’s, who is married, confirmed the word “wife” speaks of a married woman.
