Upon this rock, Jesus Christ built his Church

Balancing Rock Girraween

For many Christian denominations, the foundation of their faith is usually a version of the Trinity Doctrine in some form. But is this doctrine really the true foundation of the Church? Let’s take a look at the actual foundation that Jesus Christ built his Church on.

Matthew 16:13-18
13 Jesus came into the country of Caesarea Philippi. He asked His followers, “Who do people say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14 They said, “Some say You are John the Baptist and some say Elijah and others say Jeremiah or one of the early preachers.”

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 Jesus said to him, “Simon, son of Jonah, you are happy because you did not learn this from man. My Father in heaven has shown you this.
18 “And I tell you that you are Peter. On this rock I will build My church. The powers of hell will not be able to have power over My church.

Read the above clearly. Jesus did not build his Church on Peter. He built it on the truth that Peter spoke concerning the true identity of Jesus Christ. And what was that truth? That Jesus is the Son of God and the Christ.

Peter did not say that Jesus was God or one member of a triune God, yet that is the foundation for many. So what is it that tries to fight against the true foundation? Is it not the Gates of Hell that is trying to prevail against this truth. But for what benefit is there to attack the true foundation of the Church, which is the Body of Christ?

Here is the thing. Roman Catholics believe that the foundation was Peter and this is where their line of Popes supposedly comes from. They also believe that the foundation of their faith is the Trinity Doctrine. Not only are they wrong, but their fruit over the centuries proves that this tree was not good.

So which is it? The Catholic faith or the true faith?

Many do not realise that they side with the Catholic faith. However, it is true that this faith and foundation cannot sustain eternally any work built upon her.

For they labour in vain those who build on another foundation.

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 8:6: for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

He also wrote in Ephesians 4:5-6: one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

And Jesus said it so clearly in John 17:3: Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Are you willing to believe the truth about who God is and who Jesus is over any contrary tradition that was passed down to you?

    Hi t,

The Rock was the manifestation of the Spirit in Peter as it had in Jesus Christ.

It is all about the Spirit, not puny man.

    Hi t8,

    You misquote me.

Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.

Since he was anointed at the Jordan with the Holy Spirit that is when he became the anointed one.

Before that he was the Christ only prophetically.

    Thanks for clarifying.

So according to you, Jesus was not the actual Christ, until his baptism. That still denies that Jesus Christ came in the flesh doesn’t it?

It doesn’t say ‘Jesus came in the flesh’, but that ‘Jesus Christ came in the flesh’.

This is dangerous ground you are treading on IMO.  You seem to be teaching that Jesus Christ did not come in the flesh. Rather that Jesus came in the flesh and later became Jesus Christ.

So at the Jordan, did he then come in the flesh? No. He came in the flesh way before that. Jesus Christ came in the flesh, thus he was born Jesus Christ, but was recognized as Jesus Christ at his baptism.

    1 John 4:2
This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

    Hi t8,

    But your understanding is flawed.

Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.

But the Word was with God and was God.

Do you suggest an anointed man lived in heaven and was clothed in flesh for a while?

That is a flimsy argument if the man was yet to be conceived, born and named.

    Hi t8,

Did the apostles move and speak in the power of God but not Jesus?

Which words in the gospels pertain to the human vessel and which to the Holy Spirit within him.

You quote phil 2 as to him giving up his own power but disagree when it comes to the spiritual words that he spoke.

    John 6 63

‘It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life’

But you disagree and say they are just the words of a man.

Your argument is not with us.

To all….THERE IS “ONLY” ONE TRUE ROCK and that is GOD THE FATHER ALONE.

Psalm 18:31 ..”For who is GOD besides the “LORD”, YEHWEH? AND WHO IS A “ROCK” EXCEPT OUR GOD”. 2 Sa 22:32… For who is God, save the LORD?, and who is a “ROCK” save our GOD.

The “ROCK” Jesus was refering to, was GOD THE FATHER, And is WHO JESUS WOULD BUILD THE CHURCH BY and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

peace and love to you all and yours. …….gene

Nick, I have had you up about this accusation before.

I believe that he existed in the form of God, emptied himself, and came in the flesh.

So of course I do not believe he was a man in Heaven before he came here.

He came in the flesh. So that is when he became a man.

If you cannot understand what I am saying here, then probably best not to discuss this subject as it is going over your head.

If you just forgot what I said earlier, then that is okay.

    Hi t8,

Did the apostles move and speak in the power of God but not Jesus?

Now you are being silly. Of course they were all moved by the Spirit. No one is denying that.

If prophets spoke when moved by the Spirit, then how much more the son of God.

You seem to want to remove Jesus from the picture.

Gene, God is a rock for sure. All rests on him. There are other rocks/stones. Jesus is the chief corner stone and the apostles also make up pillars. The rock that Jesus built his Church on is the true identity of Jesus. He is the Christ and the son of God. Perhaps you have other ideas as to the foundation of the Church, so see it differently?

“I also say to you that you are Peter (Petros), and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

Neither Peter or Peter’s confession is God himself. Of course all truth is of God, especially the truth about his son.

    Hi t8,

Finally  you admit that Jesus Christ moved in the power of God.

God’s power shows up best in weak vessels.

So what did the flesh contribute?

    Hi t8,

Are you yet ready to ascribe the Words of Jesus Christ to the Holy Spirit or do you still only ascribe his actions?

    Before Abraham I am.

    Hi t8,

    Heb 1

“God…..in these last days has spoken to us in His Son”

    Do you not believe this?

    God said to Jeremiah

“Behold I have put My words in your mouth”

But some somehow think the anointing on Jesus was less powerful and effective?

    Hi t8,

    Jn 12

If anyone hears my sayings and does not keep them , I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings , has one who judges him;the word I spoke is what will judge him on the last day,For I did not speak on my own initiative, but the Father Himself Who sent me has given me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.

When will you listen to the Spirit?

    Hi Gene:

To be sure, there is “only one God”, but when Jesus stated “upon this rock I will build my church”, he was referring to the Word of God that would be spoken through him as God’s Christ, and to the Word of God that would be spoken through the Apostles.

Essentially, the rock is the foundation upon which his church will be built.

    Matthew 7:

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

    1 Co 3:

9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

    12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

    Love in Christ,
    Marty

    Hi Danny,

The plan of God was to establish a church unified by His Spirit in Christ.

If you do not have the Spirit of Christ you are none of his. Rom8

You must be born again of water and the Spirit to be a part of this plan.
