Are there two Spirits or One?

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a spirit, but is the Father also a spirit?

Well we know that the Father is God and God is spirit. The Father is the Father of all spirits and life. The Father is also the father of our Lord Jesus Christ? But the gospels tell us that the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and because of this, the child was to be called the Son of God. So who is the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Father or the Holy Spirit?

Luke 1:35
The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

The answer is that both are the father if the Trinity Doctrine is to be believed. However, I will demonstrate that the Spirit of God is the Father’s own spirit and is not another person as many believe.

1 Peter 1:14-16
Be obedient to God, and do not allow your lives to be shaped by those desires you had when you were still ignorant. Instead, be holy in all that you do, just as God who called you is holy.  The scripture says, “Be holy because I am holy.”

John 4:24
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

So God is holy and God is a spirit, thus he can be described as a holy spirit. However, we are also taught that there is one spirit, so God is more correctly called ‘the Holy Spirit’, not as one holy spirit among two or many. If the Trinity Doctrine were true, then there would be two Spirits, the Father and the Holy Spirit. But scripture tells us there is but one Spirit.

Ephesians 4:4-6
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Further, scripture clearly says that “The LORD is the Spirit”, thus the Father who is God is the Spirit. Most agree that the Father is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit took part in his conception with Mary. If the Holy Spirit was another person, then Jesus would have two fathers, the Father and the Holy Spirit. That is if the Trinity Doctrine was a true doctrine.

2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Also, if God is Spirit and he imparts his spirit into redeemed vessels, and if he will eventually be in all and through all, then that would suggest that God the Father will inhabit all by his own spirit. And we know he is the God of the living not the dead, so his spirit is life and the source of all life for his creation and also for his son. So creation is not inhabited by two spirits but one, that is God’s own spirit.

1 Corinthians 15:28
When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

Luke 20:38
He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

John 6:63
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.

Finally, we are taught in scripture that he is the Father of spirits.

Hebrews 12:9
Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!

For me I think of this in this way.

Q: Who is God?
A: The Father?

Q: What is God?
A: He is spirit

God is the Father and God is the Holy Spirit. This is not two persons but two aspects of the same God. While God is in heaven, he can inhabit all creation by his own spirit. Just as the sun is located in the centre of the Solar System, its rays shine out to all the Solar System.  Similarly, our Heavenly Father can inhabit all creation by his spirit. However as an aside, God’s own creation is not even big enough to contain him. He exists outside the cosmos too.

1 Corinthians 15:27-28
For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

1 Kings 8:27
“But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!

So God the Father can inhabit his creation by his own spirit.

This also makes sense when we read the following:

Matthew 12:32
Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

It is worse to speak against the Spirit than it is against the Son. This demonstrates to us that God is above the son and even his Spirit is above his son because the Spirit of God is God and the son of God is the Son and we know that the head of Christ is God in the same way that the head of man is Christ.

Kerwin…..anything Nick disagrees with he uses his trump card “it’s carnel logic” that tends to give him the advantage of knowing the difference, putting him on high ground, to take pop shots at others, but when he does speak about things he uses simple logic like we all do.

God has given us all minds to reason with, and with his help our reasoning will aline with his, his spirit gives us his intellect to see as he does even in our “carnal” bodies WHICH HE CONSIDERS TEMPLES. The only difference is the secource we are using in our logic, NICK want’s us to believe his source is of GOD, OURS IS NOT, unless it agrees with his logic that is.

In this way he has set himself up as judge of GOD’S people, no one here has “all” knowledge we are all trying to grow in maturity to GOD THE FATHER. WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL we do don’t cause a brother to stumble. YOU SHALL KNOW THEM BY THERE FRUITS, AND FROM THE MOUTH THE HEART SPEAKS LOUD AND CLEAR. IMO

peace and love to you and yours. …………..gene

    kw/nick and

    the logic ” is something that changes ;for it is based on what you know and have accepted to be true ;

the world has a logic different of God for the knowledge and intend of that knowledge are different so their is a different LOGIC OUTCOME

I do not know if I could figure out that there was but one God from nature itself.

    It’s like anything to me.

Did man come from one man originally. Yes. If not, then we all came from two or more men. Evolution denies we came from Adam (The Man), but the alternative is to believe that we all came from multiple men that all evolved in exactly the same way. SO I may have came from Adam, but you came from Bob who evolved into the same species as Adam independently.

As for God. Unless there were two or more eternal gods that were exactly the same (unlikely from a logical point of view) then there is one God who will be above all, even if there are other gods.

BTW, I agreed with your post. Just challenging that one statement.

In sport there is one player above all. Unless we believe that there are two or more that were exactly the same, there will always be one who is above all.

Logic demands that someone is above all and we are fools if we deny it.

Terr, it is logical that there is a creator. It is also logical that 1+1=2. I do not see these changing anytime soon.
In fact, if we deny such things, we are being foolish.

God has given us enough to know these things and we are without excuse.

to you me and others yes and our logic is based on this factor ;but the world does not believe in God /father and creator so their ;LOGIC; will differ from ours

I would argue that there logic is actually not logic at all.

If someone believes that one plus two equals five, then that is not logical and they would be without excuse to not accept that it was three.

yes in mathematics there are no opinion and the logic in math is the truth ,all others are only close tolerances; like when things seem to be that but in truth are not ,

one example is Paul full of faith and zeal but he at place his center point of his circle in the law and when Jesus faces him he change his center point to Jesus and his God ,now look how a different man he became ,

I do not argue that their logic is faulty this is true ;but in their view they find themselves true and right ;this is where all wars are fought

I wonder if we argue against logic that we are inadvertently arguing against logos?

The only thing I want to point out here is that the word logic does not mean the truth and so we must be careful  how to use it

Terr, there are things that are of the truth, such as honesty.

Logic is derived from logos. Logos has a number of uses throughout history, one of them is reason.

When God says we are without excuse, it is sometimes because he created us with the ability to reason this or that, and so we have no excuse to deny it.

We can easily reason that there must be a God for example. People who deny God deny the reason that they were born with.

    They are without excuse.

Logic is not a bad thing. Being illogical certainly has its problems.

For example, it is logical that the soul that sins will die and that someone can pay the price of that sin, so that we can go free. That is actually logical within the law.

It is illogical to say that everything came from nothing.  People who believe this are illogical and are not of the truth.

Just because someone says something is logical is no proof that it is logical.

I have never read anywhere including the bible that teaches that logic is wrong or bad.

I agree with you but you seem not to understand that it is because you have taken God truth as your center point and yes you right ,but anyone does not do that then their logic will not be in truth but in their own truth what really is no truth at all but to them it would be

I get your point and agree with you, but  my additional point is that ‘their logic’ is not logic just as their ‘truth’ is not truth.

So I don’t think logic and truth are ever bad because people falsely claim to have them.

I think they are for they are deceitful instruments that lead people ashtray of the real truth of God

this is why we have to test all those ideas and ways that people make up to see if they are of God or not

But if it leads men astray then it wasn’t truth. Truth is never a deceitful instrument. Any deceit comes from the heart of man, not from truth.

I would argue that logic is no different in that respect.

A man can argue that according to logic that 1 + 1 = 7, but that is not logical, thus he falsely claims to have logic. This has no bearing on logic itself just as Atheists have any bearing in the existence of God.

i think we agree on that ,that it was not the truth but to us yes but to many the truth is some thing else so until they come to that truth this would be their truth ,

and so their logic is false so is their truth but in their mind they believe otherwise,

1CO 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ.

2CO 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

we have relocalized our logic on Christ truth

    Glad we agree. 🙂

    Psalm 119:89
Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.

God’s truth is established for all eternity. It changes not.

One reason men look outside of the truth to proclaim what they falsely claim is truth, logic, and wise is that they love the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Many of the learned reject truth as foolishness, while God thinks their logic and wisdom is foolish. Thus to get the praise and honour that they desire, they must err.
