HOW CHRISTIANS CAME TO BELIEVE IN THE TRINITY – by C.S.Lewis

“And that is how Theology started. People already knew about God in a vague way. Then came a man who claimed to be God; and yet He was not the sort of man you could dismiss as a lunatic. He made them believe Him. They met Him again after they had seen Him killed. And then, after they had been formed into a little society or community, they found God somehow inside them as well: directing them, making them able to do things they could not do before. And when they worked it all out they found they had arrived at the Christian definition of the three-personal God.”

    Quote from Mere Christianity

    C.S.Lewis –

“In God’s dimension, so to speak, you find a being who is three Persons while remaining one being, just as a cube is six squares while remaining one cube. Of course, we cannot fully conceive a Being like that: just as, if we were so made that we perceive only two dimensions in space we could never properly imagine a cube.”

“An ordinary simple Christian kneels down to say his prayers. He is trying to get into touch with God. But if he is a Christian he knows what is prompting him to pray is also God: God, so to speak, inside him. But he also knows that all his real knowledge of God comes through Christ, the Man who was God–that Christ is standing right beside him, helping him to pray, praying for him. You see what is happening. God is the thing to which he is praying – the goal he is trying to reach. God is also the thing inside him which is pushing him on – the motive power. God is also the road or bridge along which he is being pushed to that goal. So that the whole threefold life of the three-personal Being is actually going on in that ordinary little bedroom where an ordinary man is saying his prayers.” CSL

“I said a few pages back that God is a Being which contains three Persons while remaining one Being. . . . But as soon as I begin trying to explain how these Persons are connected I have to use words which make it sound as if one of them was there before the others. The First Person is called the Father and the Second the Son. We say that the First begets or produces the second; we call it begetting, not making, because what He produces is of the same kind as Himself. In that way the word Father is the only word to use. But unfortunately it suggests that He is there first — just as a human father exists before his son. . . . we must think of the Son always, so to speak, streaming forth from the Father, like light from a lamp, or heat from a fire, or thoughts from a mind. He is the self-expression of the father — what the father has to say. And there was never a time when He was not saying it.”

“God is not a static thing–not even a person–but a dynamic, pulsating activity, a life, almost a kind of drama. Almost, if you will not think me irreverent, a kind of dance. The union between the Father and Son is such a live concrete thing that this union itself is also a Person. I know this is almost inconceivable, but look at it thus. You know that among human beings, when they get together in a family, or a club, or a trade union, people talk about the ‘spirit’ of that family, or club, or trade union. They talk about its ‘spirit’ because the individual members, when they are together, really develop particular ways of talking and behaving which they would not have if they were apart. It is as if some sort of communal personality came into existence. But of course, it is not a real person: it is only rather like a person. But that is just one of the differences between God and us. What grows out of the joint life of the Father and Son is a real Person, is in fact the Third of the Three Persons who are God.” CSL

terraricca – you are welcome to share or give your own personal understanding/belief about the last verses I posted…or just one of them…

    Isaiah 9:6
    Revelation 1:8
    John 1:1
    John 17:5
    Colossians 2:9

These few verses simply speak of Jesus as God – can you from your own understanding (not borrowed theological arguments) say why I shouldn’t accept these verses as the inspired Word of God…instead of changing what they out rightly say, to mean something quite insignificant and redundant…something more suited to human logic but devoid of spiritual life..?

So often it is our own theology that entangles us – remember, the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong…Jesus said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.” – Luke 10:21

Remember that the Pharisees knew the Scriptures more than all men, yet their Biblical knowledge only blinded them to the simple truth… causing them, in the end, to hate and crucify the the Very God they claimed to serve..!

My only question is: why do we need people to tell us who God is, when we can learn for ourselves by having a personal relationship with him.

Reading other books ,when you do not even understand God’s written words this is very unwise,if not foolish,Going to second hand opinion and rejecting the truth from the horse mouth so to Speak ,that is we’re all the leaders in religion find their victims and make them their prozelites ,and so become worse than the leader ,this was and is not the way of true believers the true believer always is guided towards God and his word and to his son teachings ,to bring them into the new covenant with the son, no religion organization ,no other book neede beside the scriptures ,this is what brings you to be born again ,when you have mastered the scriptures and practice what it says, and obey God,

Not one religion or book ,other than the scriptures can give or bring you there .

David do not hide behind stupid excuses ,I am sure that as a trinitarian in believe you are not a born again believer, and you never received the holy spirit, this is an illusion that someone as put in your head ,not true,

David you accuse us of putting out own view on things, yet we give you scripture as evidence you give us your opinions.

Jesus said, I and the Father are one. What does this mean? Is he the Father or is he united with the Father?

Well Jesus invites us to be part of that oneness too and we are not God. Likewise, Jesus is one with God, but is not God. When we are one with something it means that we are not that thing or person, but we are united with them.

    John 17:21
that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Again your teaching falls short of what scripture teaches. Paul advised us to test all teaching with scripture and he commended the Bereans for this.

Agreed. We have the Spirit of God and the scriptures. But certain men have crept in and say we ALSO need the Trinity Doctrine, a hypothesis officially formulated in the fourth century. Once the Roman Beast made this doctrine official, all opposition was persecuted or put to death. The blood of the martyrs is on her hands.

The fruit is bad, the circumstances were bad, and because it is an extra-biblical doctrine and that we are told it is the foundation, that is very very bad.

I believe the message today relating to this is, “come out of her my people”.

yes sadly I understand your point – but honestly it’s equally as bad as the video you posted….!

you say that, because someone has made an illustration to explain the trinity, that they’ve actually made an ‘idol’…because, well.. it’s symbolic and man made and represents God – and witches make symbols..!?

Really this only proves the sublime ridiculousness of your anti-Trinity delusion…no power or prestige of any description is, for any one moment, ascribed to this symbolic diagram at all – it is purely an educational illustration used for the sole purpose of bringing understanding about the Godhead (which it does rather well)…so thank you again for sharing it, it is probably the best thing you’ve done so far…

I personally think the beast is sin in the world, and the image of the beast is the tv and the internet. So when we are called to come out of her, it’s out of not the world or even the internet but the sin. Because in order to do anything to help others we have to be in the world and the internet too.
I think that mans debates over Christian theology is nothing but a distraction, because we were called to save the lost.
I have repented for my own participation.

I’m actually not selling anything. I am giving you Jesus’s own words for free. “Eternal life is this =====> to know the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom he has sent.

That is it in a nutshell. Pretty simple. Simplicity in Christ.

Beware of those who will try to draw you away from this simplicity. The Trinity Doctrine is not simple and no one understands it. It is another foundation. But Jesus built his Church on this truth, “you are the son of the living God, the messiah”.

I wonder if Paul and Titus repented of that?

Titus 1:9: He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.

DavidL. you defend making an icon or image with your own hands or mind of God. And this is what I believe the Trinity is and you don’t seem to be concerned about that. This icon/image of the Trinity is made by man and for man. It is God subject to man’s mind, or man explaining God using his own spirit.

But that which is of God comes from the Spirit of God and that which is of man comes from the spirit of man.

Jesus said that the only true God was the Father. Paul said, that for us, there is one God the Father. The first commandment is that God is one, (not triune).

I realise that these scriptures have no influence on you DavidL. But for the sake of the readers, there is one true God the Father and his son whom this God made both Lord and Christ is Jesus the Nazarene. This God is Jesus Father and God and our Father and God. This is eternal life. This is the faith handed down to us. This is the foundation of the Church. Do not drink the wine of the Harlot, it will make you drunk and put you in a stupor.
