Was God Manifest in the Flesh?

1 Timothy 3:16

1 Timothy 3:16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

This scripture infers that Jesus is God. Although you could argue that even we should manifest God in our lives knowing full well we are not God. Regardless, this verse is certainly a verse that Trinitarians use as a proof verse, and to the untrained eye, people may well accept that Jesus is God based on this verse alone.

But is this all there is to this matter.

Apparently this verse is controversial because most other translations do not say “God was manifest in the flesh”, rather they say “He was manifest in the flesh”.

So what is going on here. Why does the KJV say ‘God’ and most other translations say ‘He’?

I found this explanation in and thought it would be helpful to share it.

Thank you so much for this question. It is a very interesting one.

A few weeks ago, I inquired of a Greek translator who often posts on this site, asking him this very same thing. He kindly and carefully explained to me that, first off, one must understand the nomina sacra (sacred names). He explained that these are abbreviations, in early manuscripts, of certain names and titles.

In ancient manuscripts 1 Timothy 3:16 had the word “os” which looks like: “OC” and means “he”.

The nomina sacra of God looks like OC but it has a horizontal line through the middle of the O and a long horizontal line over both letters (as Abernathy, above, explained).

The Greek translator continues, and I quote: “In one old manuscript (Codex Alexandrinus) it seems to the nomina sacra, but an analysis of the manuscript demonstrated that the two horizontal lines were added centuries later.

Many late manuscripts have the nomina sacra, but all manuscripts earlier than about 800AD have OC “He”

So “He was manifest in the flesh” is supported by all the most ancient manuscripts, “God was manifest in the flesh” has no attestation before 800 AD.”

End quote.

    Hi KW,

Of course the kingdom is like a fisherman who pulls up a net and finds all sorts of fish.

    Some are useless and discarded.

    Nick,

There is yet a remnant of Israel but the kingdom was given to those who enter the new covenant be they Hebrew or Gentile.

She, the kingdom, is the woman that will become married.

    Nick,

Why do you think those that get thrown out make it through the narrow gate?

    Hi KW,

    Wrong order.

They make it into the kingdom but are as the fish caught that get thrown out.

They do not produce any profit for their master.

They do not add to the coin given them.

    Hi KW,

    She is not a kingdom.

The kingdom does not get married.

    Nick,

She is the kingdom of heaven which is like a net. She will be made ready when the those things that are impure are removed. That will happen when those that did not strive by faith to pass through the narrow door are told I do know you. Faith comes by grace.

    Nick,

Those that attempt to enter without going through the gate are thieves.

    Hi KW,

    A fine fantasy.

But it does not relate to revelation.

The kingdom of heaven is not a woman who is like a net.

    Hi KW,

    The gate is Jesus Christ

Those who hope for salvation without being spiritually joined to him are in for disappointment

    Nick,

    1) The gospel is the net and those who claim to follow it are the fish.
    2) Those that claim to follow the gospel are the church.
    3) The church is the bride.

    1) The word of God is the net.
    2) Those that claim to follow it are members of the kingdom of heaven, aka fish.
    3) The kingdom of Yahweh is the woman. (2 Corinthians 13:8)

Which of these do you disagree with?

    Hi KW,

    The gospel is the net.

Those who obey the gospel are born again into the kingdom.

They enter through the narrow gate.

The foolish rest on their laurels and proclaim their salvation.

The wise seek to add grace to grace.

    Hi KW,

In truth we are only the woman, the bride that needs to be purified before being chosen by the King.

We share now in his Spirit but at the wedding feast we will truly become one with him.

    Nick,

In Revelations it is the word of God that gives birth to the child and is chased by the dragon. It is the children of the word that the dragon pursues when the word is hidden in her place.

    Hi KW,

No doubt you will show from scripture that what you say is true.

    Or will you?

    Nick,

I have already done that but here is another verse.

Matthew 11:19Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

    Hi KW,

Natural man is only capable of a superficial view.

But you have shown nothing but your opinions.

    Nick,

That is your opinion you voice as a natural man.

    Think Spiritually.

Jesus reveals of the child of God’s word, as well as his wisdom, by his actions for they are born of the wisdom, as well as the word, of God.

Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s word, otherwise known as the Law.

    Hi KW,

He was filled with the Spirit .

He was led by the Spirit.

God was in him reconciling the world to Himself.
