It is clear that those “who does evil hates the light” and so their name has not been written in the book of life. Their motivation is clear to God and their actions follow from their motivation. The AV of the KJV is not the only one. The alternative translation just shifts what occurred before the beginning of the world. In it instead of Jesus being slain it is that all those that will be saved are already written in the book of life before they are born, much less do anything good or evil.
