Gene,
Jesus chose to sacrifice himself that those that believe not be visited by the angel of death.
The post of the doors of believers’ hearts must also be marked with his blood for the angel of death not to visit.
This reject doing so will die even if they are not the first born child.
Note: I am using angel of death in a figurative sense.

Miia,
If I remember rightly then love also hates evil and delights in righteousness.
Even sinners you love for their potential do do what is right. You hate what they are are now.
The same applies to yourself as well.
Some paraphrase this hating sin and loving the sinner.
People know the words but have trouble actually doing it. In this age…[Read more]

1 John 3:9Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
I understand that those that walk according to the Spirit do not sin as sin is of the flesh and not of the Spirit. When a Christian sins they are rejecting the…[Read more]

Ed J,
That is an interesting way of looking at it though I have looked at it as true godliness is a power in itself.
Your understanding may well be correct.

miia,
How does Scripture describe godly love?
kerwin replied to the topic in the forum Who is this Jesus? 10 years, 5 months ago
Ed J,
2Tim.3:5 is about the godless that Jude also speaks of in 1:12 of his letter.
Eph.5:26-27 does go with 1 John 5:18 and the ones I mentioned.

Terrarica,
1) God literally forsake him
2) Jesus felt like God did but God did not literally forsake him.One of the two are the only reason I see for Jesus to say those words.

Bodhitharta,
Why do you think I should time out of my fairly active day to view a video I cannot cross examine?
kerwin replied to the topic The Cross in the forum Inspirational writings & sermons 10 years, 5 months ago
Terrarica,
t8 believes it is because God forsake Jesus.
I have to agree since the words are past tense and Jesus does not lie.
Perhaps it was a more emotional statement and so not to be taken literally.
I have not looked into that hypothesis.

1John 5:18 goes with Galatians 5:19-24 and Romans 8:1-4.

Romans 7:17-18Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

AndrewAD,
Certain individuals do have trouble because they do not want to believe Jesus Christ is a human being that had the flesh nature of humanity. His example is too much of a challenge for them to except it is possible as they do not believe all things are possible with God.
Jesus once told his student-followers ” If ye then, being…[Read more]

AndrewAD,
Jesus was totally depraved as of the flesh but he was totally pure as of the Spirit. That is why he prayed not “my will but thine”. (Luke 22:42) It also why he told the man who called him good teacher that no one was good but God. (Luke 18:18-19) Jesus lived by the Spirit and not by the desires of the flesh and so did not sin.

AddrewAD,
The name of the doctrine of total depravity can be misunderstood by those that lack knowledge. This is so well known that the Wikipedia article addresses the fallacy.
Wikipedia article on total depravity under theology.
The term “total depravity”, as understood in colloquial English, obscures the theological issues involved. Reformed…

Gene,
Some teach that humanity bears the guilt of Adam’s sin which is absurd. From what I read you agree with that statement. You also stated that each human has the potential to sin which I agree with. It is unclear whether or not you believe all human beings without the Spirit will sin. Could you please clarify that point for me. Thank you.
kerwin replied to the topic Upon this rock, Jesus Christ built his Church in the forum Truth or Tradition 10 years, 5 months ago
Gene,
The sun moon is false analogy as the use of the word “rock” is symbolic. As t8 points out “rock” symbolized obedience to Jesus’ teaching and terrarica points out it symbolizes the kingdom of heaven in yet another one.
It is also considers details that Scripture ignores as in Genesis 1:14-16 both the sun and the moon are called lights.…[Read more]

According to the doctrine of total depravity I hear from Scripture humanity is a slave of sin because they have the flesh to live by but the Spirit. Jesus also had the flesh, aka sinful nature, but he was the first one given the Spirit. He walked by the Spirit through his faith in God as it is written “the righteous live by faith”.…[Read more]

Some of the tenets of original sin are nonsense. I have no idea what Gene holds but I hold the tenet of total depravity which some claim is derived from a teaching of Augustine of Hippo. AndrewAD,
Jesus was born of a virgin just as testified in Scripture and from what I remember Gene also holds that is true.
I think the most likely way is that God took a part of Mary and made Jesus of that part just as Eve was made of a part of Adam. The only difference except for gender is that Jesus was formed as a conceptus and not as an…[Read more]
