(I haven't heard about the people in USA 100 years ago, but who knows, maybe you're right.)

Hi NickThere were a lot of conscientious objectors that were imprisoned in World War 1 and 2, and some even lost their lives (not in New Zealand). At the moment it's not safe being a Christadelphian in some countries like Iran, but that's certainly not unique to us.Martyrdom is more of a historic thing I guess – the books that you mentioned are…[Read more]

Hi everyoneActually, yes, I do have a quick look at the board every couple of weeks, and naturally this topic caught my eye!——————–Yes, we do believe that Christians need to be born again in baptism, that's entirely Biblical.——————–Yes, we do believe that God works in our lives through the Holy Spirit – we believe that…[Read more]

Hi allhttp://www.godstruthfortoday.org/Library/knoch/FiguresOfSpeech.htmThis article goes into detail about the use of figures of speech in the Bible. I'll quote the most salient bit:Quote An Idiom (Idioma) is an expression or mannerism, peculiar to a language, which does not convey the proper sense when literally translated. Most of the so-called…[Read more]

Quote (david @ Mar. 27 2006,07:53)“Christ is praying for his pre-assigned glory; glory that he had reserved alongside the Father before the world was!He is not saying that he was alongside the Father (to use your phrase); he is praying for the glory that was alongside the Father before the world was!”He is not saying that he was alongside the…[Read more]

Quote (seekingtruth @ Mar. 27 2006,10:04)I agree the day he died is a small thing but I'm concerned for you. Jesus was always very careful with His words and I cannot begin to believe that He would even use a “figure of speech”, that would misrepresent the truth. Especially with it being so specific on 3 nights. The Bible admonishes us to be…[Read more]

Hi DavidI don't believe that Jesus existed until he was born, so John 17 isn't going to impress me much as an argument for heaven-going! Jesus is “the beginning” because he is “the firstborn from the dead” (Col 1:18) – which happened around 2000 years ago, not 13 billion. But as Isa 1:18 says, this should all go in another thread, as it's a bit of…[Read more]

Hi seekingtruthIf it's a matter of a figure of speech, as I'm suggesting, then this has nothing to do with changing or ignoring the words of Jesus.I've got some notes on this at home, will dig them up tonight. (On a scale of big issues to little issues, this one's little.)God blessSam

I go into that in the thread – basically the Jews counted inclusively, so Friday, Saturday, Sunday would have been described as 3 days.I didn't dream that up for myself – you can look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counting. It's fairly well established I think. It's likely that the phrase “three days and three nights” is just an emphatic way of…[Read more]

Quote (seekingtruth @ Mar. 24 2006,10:49)Hi SammoFrom a quick read of the last couple of pages I would have to agree with you that God has not forsaken Israel. The best scripture I know for that is Romans 11. I did not see it listed but it was a quick read.Hi seekingtruthI agree completely, I think Romans 11 makes that point very clear. For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.” (Jeremiah 30:11)This passage is saying that the nation is Israel is special, as opposed to nations w…[Read more]

Also, the fact that Israel still has an important role to play in God's purpose is clear even if you don't consider the Bible at all – that Israel still exists at all, and even more incredibly are back in their land – is an extremely clear and compelling testimony that they are still important to God. Incidentally, this was all clearly prophesied…[Read more]
