Ironic.  I was thinking about this today.

The thief on the cross had the green light from Jesus – he was going to be counted in paradise.  But wait! he wasn't water baptized?  It must not be essential then?

    Hi Mandy

    True!

    Good evening, Keith –

What of those who say you must be “born of water” before you can be saved? What do you think of that?

There are two ways of looking at that.

Water is a type of the Word of God, just as Water is a type of the Spirit.

The Spirit and the Water are One.

The other way is you can say since man is born from water (the womans water breaks) that Yeshua was saying that to enter the Kingdom one had to be born of flesh (man) and of the Spirit, so he says that which is born of flesh is flesh and that which is born of Spirit is Spirit. John 3.

I do not think that literal water baptism is spoken of in John 3.

    IMO

NICK – are you listening to this? :D

I tried to explain this to Nick the other night and he would not agree that this passage is speaking of flesh giving birth to flesh. He would not conceed that “water” had anything to do with “flesh”.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts Keith.

    Hi WJ,
Wonderful way to explain Jn 3:3-8. I agree with that.
    Thanks

    Hi GM,
Despite the continued divisions of understanding over the past 2000 years on the meaning of the words, the words themselves have outlived all and will stand till the end.
They are more reliable than men.

The truth is that the thief was not reborn of water (as you understand it meaning baptism).

The truth is that Jesus said the thief would be in Paradise.

Water baptism needed for salvation? It doesn't appear to be truth here, in this situation.

Does Jesus not have God's authority to forgive?

    Hi TT,
The thief died under the old covenant as the blood of Jesus was not yet poured out.

But not yet resurrected and ascended to glory. A dead man is not our Savior.

You are absolutely right, but then, neither did Jesus begin his millennium reign yet; that is when the thief will be resurrected.

    Hi Georg,
The promise was given while Jesus lived.

    That's right.
And did not Abraham receive the promise, even before Jesus lived?

    No.

I said that wrong, I wanted to say; was not Abraham “given” the promise, even before Jesus lived?
But you answered quite correctly, Abraham has not received his promise yet, and neither did the thief; otherwise the thief would have been in paradise ahead of Jesus.
