I am transferring our conversation from the Truth or Traditions Forum: Philippians 2 thread to this new thread at your suggestion. I am not going to repeat anything that occured in that thread because I am only addressing the last point we discussed and I believe it is covered well enough in this post as it is.
The relationship between the Spirit of God and the Prophets is summed up in this scripture:
2 Peter 1:21(NIV) reads:
Quote For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
While the relationship between the Spirit and those whom are in the New Covenant is phrased in this way:
Galatians 5:16(NIV) reads:
Quote So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
Now I am not stating that some under the New Covenant do not have the gift of prophecy because we are told they do. I am saying that no one that is outside of the New Covenant was instructed to live by the Spirit. That is because they do not have it in the same way as that gift of the spirit is the promise of the New Covenant just as prophesized in Isaiah 31:31-33.
You can also see this between the baptism of John and the baptism that Peter preached after Jesus’ ascension as the difference between the two is receiving the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist did not preach that particular promise could be received because it was not yet time for it to be fulfilled.
As an aside note to Dennison, The fulfillment of the promise of the Holy Spirit is the beginning of the New Creation which will not be complete until Judgment Day or thereabouts.
