I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on why the sacrifice was burnt under to old covenant?
I have been in a long running discussion with someone on a related subject and this came up.
This person maintained that the sacrifice was completely destroyed to show that Jesus body was completely consumed upon death and that the verses that say Jesus is seated on the Father's throne/ right hand are merely symbolic. (This person is Pentecostal Oneness in there views on God)I came up with the following possibilities
1 : Jesus' sacrifice represented a sinless incorruptible life given.
In order for this to be typed in the old covenant the sacrifice needed to be burnt to prevent it from corrupting…2 : The word sacrifice is taken from another word meaning to slaughter or kill for food.
Obviously God has no need of food but it is said of the fire that fell on Elijah's sacrifice – that the fire consumed it.3 : The fire symbolized the Holy Spirit, we also are told to present our bodies a living sacrifice which is consumed by the Holy Spirit. For our God is a consuming fire, even a Jealous God.
Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit, for all the fullness of the Godhead bodily dwelt in Him.I'm sure there is a whole lot more
I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this …April 13, 2006 at 8:04 pm#12709NickHassanParticipantHi Malcolm,
The word for “burnt” OLAH [5930a], is derived from ALAH [5927], a prim .word :”to go up, ascend, climb”.So the emphasis is not on what is happening down on earth where the offering is consumed by fire , but on what happens to the smoke, it rises to the heavens.
Hope this helps.April 14, 2006 at 11:54 pm#12732malcolm ferrisParticipantThanx Nick, there is a whole side that I had overlooked there
