Demons were known in the pagan world as spirits that brought BOTH good and evil.
What does scripture say in regards to false gods and demons?Jeremiah 10:3 For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. 4 They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple. 5 They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good.” 6 Inasmuch as there is none like You, O Lord (You are great, and Your name is great in might), 7 Who would not fear You, O King of the nations? For this is Your rightful due. For among all the wise men of the nations, And in all their kingdoms, There is none like You. 8 But they are altogether dull-hearted and foolish; A wooden idol is a worthless doctrine. 9 Silver is beaten into plates; It is brought from Tarshish, And gold from Uphaz, The work of the craftsman And of the hands of the metalsmith; Blue and purple are their clothing; They are all the work of skillful men. 10 But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation. 11 Thus you shall say to them: “The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.” 12 He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion. 13 When He utters His voice, There is a multitude of waters in the heavens: “And He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, He brings the wind out of His treasuries.” 14 Everyone is dull-hearted, without knowledge; Every metalsmith is put to shame by an image; For his molded image is falsehood, And there is no breath in them. 15 They are futile, a work of errors; In the time of their punishment they shall perish.
Obviously the wooden image itself was not believed to have a breath but what it stood for was being declared as not having any breath, the false god and their demons were just figments of people’s imaginations. What affirmation are we given to know that they couldn’t possibly be real? God telling us that there is NO other like Him that can bring good or evil unto man. Elsewhere we are told that God makes the deaf, mute and blind. Elsewhere we see that it is YHWH’s powers that bring madness of mind. Elsewhere in scripture do we see God sending evil spirits. Elsewhere in scripture do we see YHWH say that He ALONE brings calamity and darkness.
I just don’t understand how given all these SCRIPTURAL facts, people can then turn and say that the demons or evil spirits that Jesus heals people from in the NT are of powers other then YHWH’s?
The OT firmly establishes that God ALONE has the supernatural powers to make a man mad, blind and deaf, He ALONE brings cursing and He alone has the powers to undue cursing.

The OT is not our guide for understanding the deeper matters.

Why don't you first work on proving the definition of your SATAN through scripture? My definition is adversary, how about yours?
My approach is that when I see the word adversary I look at the context surrounding the word to figure out just what type of adversary the scripture is referring to. Context shows at times in the bible the adversary represents one of God's messengers being an adversary to man. Context shows us that the adversary is shown to be one man against another. Where in scripture do we see that the surrounding context points to the adversary as being a rebel spirit against God and man?
We are shown directly that the adversary represents God's messengers and man himself, where is the direct scripture that links the adversary to a rebel spirit? The book of Job? No, that adversary prays to God and asks Him to stretch out His hand to curse Job, that adversary OBEYS God and he carry's out God's instructions, just like any other of God's messengers would do. That is hardly proof of a rebel spirit to me.
Once again Nick, why don't you prove through scripture the definition of your Satan?
I stick with what the scriptures give which is ADVERSARY!

Your mind is revealed as it leaps to the assumption that I would suggest that my kids made a pact with the devil.
Kathi,
Read my post again. I said that I “hope” you never said anything cruel to your teens about their behavior being satanic. Am I to believe that teens make pacts with the devil just because the web says so? You could provide a dozen links and I would know better. They do NOT understand what they are doing. My wife has been working for a Christian counseling center for 20 years and she has seen a whole lot of troubled teens and satan ain't the problem. Teens are confused and in a lot of pain. They are in identity crisis. Some of the problems are chemical and are cured by prescription drugs. I seriously think that you need a major reality overhaul check.thinker

Hi JackSorry!
I too have had personal experiences with satanic possesion in others.
Just as the scriptures show Jesus and the Apostles casting out devils, I have cast them out and seen glorious instantaneous changes in the person.
Satan has been cast down to the earth knowing that his time is short. Remember a 1000 years is as a day to the Lord.
So a short time to satan may be thousands of years.
No my brother, there is still spiritual wickedness in high places and spiritual battles going on against the church of Jesus Christ, and we are told to put on the whole armour of God that we might be able to stand and having done all to stand.
You are correct Jesus dealt the death blow to the enemy at his death just like he dealt the death blow to sin in our bodies.
Yet we still get old and sick and eventually die. Judicially it is finished, but the whole creation still groans and travails awaiting for the manifestation of the Sons of God in the earth.
For the believer satan is defeated unless we give him strongholds in our lives by submitting to his temptations.

Hi JackBTW, read Revelation 20, it doesnt say satan was cast down, it says that an Angel of the Lord came down from heaven.
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan“, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Rev 20:1-3
Before this, satan was cast out of heaven when there was war in heaven and two thirds of the angels followed him.
That is what Jesus saw when he said he saw satan as lightning fall.
The first ressurection hasnt happened yet so satan hasnt been bound yet.

July 1, 2009 at 5:34 am#171462davidParticipantThe Hitchens video is interesting. He touches on several things that seem to indicate that Jesus did exist, although he believes, as a deluded person. He points out that if it was all made up, they would have done a better job, such as just saying that Jesus was born in bethlehem, instead of having to go there. Or how it was “stupid” women, as he says who saw Jesus after the resurrection and if it was all made up, they would have had respectable men seeing him (Although of course, many men did see him.)
Of course, this person has many things just wrong. He says Jesus central theme is take no thought for the morrow. “No care for your children..that you should abandon your family…just follow me.” Jesus did not say any of these things.
It's a great argument but a false one. Jesus did say to follow him. He did say to put him first and pick up your torture stake and follow him. But he didn't say to show no care for your children. He should not speak of being on the moral high ground and then lie and misrepresent what Jesus said. This guy also seems to not be wise enough to understand that saying archaelogy does not support the Bible (in this case, of the exodus) is a stupid move. Over and over and over again, people have gotten egg on their faces by saying: See, that person never existed, this kingdom never existed, etc. And then, they are proven wrong.

WJ,
Satan was bound when he was cursed in the garden. Note that it says that it was the “ancient serpent” that was bound. So satan's binding refers back to his demise in the garden. It says that he was bound for thousands of years. The thousands of years were the successive ages of the old covenant period. That satan was bound throughout the old covenant period is substantiated by the fact that there was no demonic activity during that time. Then he was loosed for that little season between Christ's first and second advents. This is when we see a whole lot of demonic activity. When Christ returned in AD70 satan was judged and cast into the lake of fire. The world at that time was judged also.
In John 12:32 Jesus said,
Quote NOW is the judgment of this world. NOW is the prince of this world cast out You have to tie Jesus' statement in with Revelation 20 which puts the judgment of the world and satan's final demise at the same point in time. Therefore, the expression “NOW is the prince of this world cast out” refers to satan's final judgment along with the world of that time.

Hello JN,
Some on here do not believe that demons are able to torment people today and wouldn't have been able to help that poor woman. They probably would have given her the number of their psychiatrist so they could take a little anti-depressant pill to calm the torment instead of doing business with the demon. IMO It is sad! I am not saying that mental illness cannot be caused by something other than demons but I believe that what may look like mental illness might truly be the result of demons. I am also not saying that anti-depressants shouldn't be taken by some. Thanks for sharing!

They would have not have helped the people because they don't believe in that type of affliction. It is like a person that goes to a doctor for a broken leg and the doctor doesn't believe people can break their leg so he prescribes pain killer and sends them home.
Blessings,
Kathi
Hi KathiTrue! No they were no actors, they were instantaneously changed!

“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan”, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Rev 20:1-3
WJ,
Satan was bound when he was cursed in the garden.
Quote The first ressurection hasnt happened yet so satan hasnt been bound yet. The book of revelation in its entirety has been fulfilled.

Hi JackAll I can say is “scriptures please”? For what you just said is your opinion!
Blessings Keith
Keith,
I did give Scriptures. It says that the ancient serpent was bound. What other ancient serpent does the Scripture speak about except that one that in the garden of Eden? And what about John 12:32?thinker
Hi JackThe serpent being “ancient” does not mean that is when he was bound. It simply means that he is Old or goes back to the begining of the creation, or the garden.
Jesus said he was a liar from the beginning!
If he was bound then, then who was it that afflicted Job?
And there is no indication anywhere that the thousand years has taken place for then the Glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea, and that hasnt happened yet. IMO.
As far as John 12:31, 32, it simply says satan was cast out when Jesus was crucified which could be what Jesus was refering to when he says he saw satan as lightning fall!
