I believe that “the gift of prophecy” means to *GIVE* prophecy rather than to interpret prophecy.

You mean near future perophesies?
I never see the apostles make any near future prophesies.
To interpret all the symbols;one need the gift.

Yes this is true;John was given the vision of things to come,
and Paul the vision of the son of perdition.
The 24 elders have seen the prophesies of revelation also.
