Could the Bible actually be teaching the flood was just a regional event, or are Christians committed to believing the floodwaters covered the whole face of the earth?
It was probably a local flood. The world back then was the known civilisation, not the whole planet. For example, it says of the Roman Empire that it would trample the whole earth. It simply means the known world. Earth today is the name of the planet, but it was not the name of the planet in ancient times. But earth today can also mean land and even soil.
