I live in a suburb of New Orleans La. Unless you've been on mars without a raido you know what happened.
I work for the Orleans levee board. The levee board maintains the levees. They don't build levees. The corps of engineers designs and hires contractors to build the levees. Twice a year the levee board and the corps of engineers inspect the levees. I'm a mechanic who used to repair and maintain the equipment. I injured my back, had open heart surgey so they put me in a office where i punch in data so the computer can give me a requistion number.
Three days before Katrina the Levee Board knew we were in trouble. Sunday before Katrina hit we were ordered to come in and bring enough clothes and what nots to last at least three days. So everyone (about 150 men) did just that.
Now the mechanic shop's job other than keeping everything running during a hurricane was to cook the food for all the men. Well, I noticed we (The mechanics ) were not setting up the grills, stoves, tables etc. in order to feed the men. So I asked one of the supervisors what was going on. He said what do you mean? I said the mechanics are doing nothing! He said what do you want to do work! I said yes I do I want to bring all that food where we will be during the hurricane. He said where do you want to bring it! I said don't we have a place to go, some place like one of the UNO's (a collage) buildings like on the sixth floor and how are we going to get in the buliding? I said we are going to break the door down. He said, get this, THAT'S ILLEGAL!!!!! Hey Ray I said I think we are sort of in an emergency! He just looked at me! Weird!About 1:45 that afternoon the big cheese (big boss) told us to go home! Everyone looked at each others mouth that was hanging on the ground and said WHAT?!!!. I said and where are we supposed to go Bill! I'm not going home and wait for my house to be flooded or blown down! We couldn't go west that was blocked off all the roads and hwys were jamed pack full of traffic. Same as north and south was out of the question!! The only way out was east but they were about to close that hwy down too!! So seven (that's a good number) of us scrammed and made a convoy east. Now the raido was full of news. We were barreling down the hwy east and I herd the radio say “don't go east the traffic is backed up” we stopped and decided to go on, where else were we to go! We were traveling at 55mph when another warning came on the radio there is a car on fire on the bridge, don't go that way! We just kept going we came to the bridge not 5 minutes latter and saw a charcoaled car ON THE SIDE Alright everyone cheered!
Now here's the thing about two days earlier I was watching a comedy (tv envangilst ) And the guy said that when you are blest people around you will be blest too no matter what they believe, it can't be helped the blissing over flows. I usually (like i said) laugh at tv evangelist but for some reason it hit home and at the time I didn't know why, until that Sunday. We were moving about 60-65 mph with absoulety NO TRAFFIC we were the only vehicles on that hwy. Two of the guys got off in Mississippi. When we stoped to wish them good luck, I said are you sure you want to leave us because WE ARE BLEST everyone nodded yes. I said it again “I MEAN WE ARE BLEST, YOU HEAR, BLEST”! With a smile on everyones face they said YES WE ARE BLEST. That's when I pointed out all the miracles that happened, do you guys think that was luck?! NO! NO! everyone said, we “ARE” blest! The two guys had relitives in Mississippi split with us.
The five of us LANDED in Oxford Alabama! Of course I was tagged the Jesus freek, don't mind him he reads the bible, he's nuts! But boy all of a suden I wasn't so nuts! One night I did some preaching I knew that one fellow Knew NOTHING of God, I mean nothing. His family were atheist. Once the storm passed word got out about people drowning! I said you know this reminds about Sodom and Gamora. Do you know about Sodom and Gamora Grady, I asked in a nice very soft voice so he wouldn't be too embrassed. He said no with his head hung down, my heart really went out to him. He was bunking with a Catholic buddy who at least knew the story. I explained about Lots wife looking back and turning to salt. Couldn't leave her material things behind, I said just like those folks back home. I said tell you what, we are in a nice room with a clean warm bed and plenty of places to eat! Are we blest i ask I thought I was going to get an Amen. My catholic friend said you know what 1) we flew down a road that was supposed to be jammed pack with traffic. 2) Had no problem finding gas. 3) And you are right this motel is nice. WE ARE BLEST!!!
1) New Orleans, the party town known for it's prostitution, drunkness, and recently for it's Gay convention/parade.
2)The gay parade was suppose to be on labour day.
3)They had a minister who went down to the French Quarter and shot a movie of all the gay people doing their thing in the middle of the day. Showed it to the mayor, who said that “we couldn't have that in the street in the day. If they wanted to do their thing they should stay in their room. As far as chasing them out of town, they bring in a lot of (you guess it) MONEY!!
4) I was listening to this minister on my way back home from work, he had what i thought was some good points. He blasted i mean let them have it on his local christian radio slot
5) That went on for a year, LAST YEAR! Like God was giving them time to repent, he sent His messenger to warn them, but to no avail.
6) Katrina hit, you know the story.
7) The gay parade was at the very least was canceled. The mayor came on the one tv station we had and said “someone told me this was a cleansing from God, so i gotta check into that”October 29, 2005 at 10:46 am#10116NickHassanParticipantHi kenrch,
Thanks for that amazing story.December 28, 2005 at 11:55 am#11030ProclaimerParticipantYeah, thx kenrch.
We don't get many hurricanes here, but it seems that 2005 was a year of major disasters for the world.
Hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes. I can't remember a year that compares.
Roughly 1 week before the (9) earthquake in Indonesia, we had an (8) earthquake out at sea, (south of New Zealand). Thankfully there was no tsunami, but it could have been a double whammy for that part of the world.

Great story. I lol when I read the part where you said you “were watching a comedy on t.v.” they have that affect on me too, either that or they make me what to throw the blasted thing out of the nearest window.
What an inspiration.January 13, 2006 at 1:56 am#11148kenrchParticipantQuote (Bastian @ Jan. 05 2006,03:32) K. Great story. It's true!
This city still looks like a nuke hit it. Little has been done. It's like they don't know where to start. The Mayor and his “boys” have an Idea sounds good. They want a smaller New Orleans, but of course they will keep Bourbon street jumping with all the usual stuff. I don't think the Lord will do anything unless they come back with the Gay Lesbian weekend/parade it's really too disgusting too talk about. On the brighter side My house needed a new roof and fence. Katrinea paid for both, so I'm blest. Still got a job, new roof and fence, next will be a small shed. Everything I needed will be replaced with the “new”.
Isn't our God AWESOME!!!February 9, 2006 at 10:09 am#11540ProclaimerParticipantYeah God's like that.
He doesn't fix up the old, he gives us new.

Amen t8!March 22, 2006 at 2:14 am#11890sandraParticipantI watched and prayed as Katrina Hit and wondered how fellow brothers and sisters in Christ were doing in Louisiana. Your story was absolutely wonderful.
March 23, 2006 at 9:24 am#11939ProclaimerParticipantAnyone here from Cairns, Australia?
I was there last year and loved it. I went to the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
I heard that it was just hit by a category 5 cyclone and caused much devastation.
March 25, 2006 at 3:55 am#11986kenrchParticipantNo t8 I didn't know but all these things must happen.
Seems like they are getting closer and closer.1Th 5:3 When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.
March 25, 2006 at 10:57 am#12001ProclaimerParticipantTrue kenrch,
I was watching a program that was talking about the rise in powerful cyclones around the world. The conclusion was global warming. Whatever the reason it was prophecied that natural disasters would increase like birth pains of a woman. It see,s to be happening before our eyes.
Our generation has also witnessed the miraculous birth of Israel.
Surely God is at work and not slack concerning his promises.
Amen.
March 28, 2006 at 3:21 am#12066sandraParticipantNot from Australia, I'm from Canada T8, but, I did travel to New Zealand and Australia. Yes, the Great Barrier Reef, is wonderful!

July 9, 2007 at 6:48 pm#58929AnonymousInactiveAbout a week and a half before Katrina hit I was on a layover in downtown New Orleans (used to be a flight attendant). I loved the old architecture, music & food there (stayed out of Bourbon St & the casinos, however). As I was walking down one of the streets in the French Quarter looking at the old houses, this thought suddenly came to me…”What are YOU doing here? Did you come to say good-bye?” I thought, “Good-Bye? I LOVE New Orleans, I'll always want to come back. Why would I say Good-Bye?” and the next thought I had was “It will never be the same.” I felt confused and inexplicably sad for the rest of my day there. Less than 2 weeks later it (unfortunately) all made sense.
