The previous verses say in which way Christ emptied Himself —
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion,
2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
3Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
4do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.We can empty ourselves in this way —
Hi Music4two:I agree with this and also as Philippians 2:7 states of Jesus, “He made himself to reputation”. He ate with sinners. He did not try to exalt himself because of his position in the body of Christ. As the Apostle paul says, “But by the grace of God I am what I am.” (1 Co. 15:10)
God Bless
Hi Music42 and Nick:I believe that verse 3 & 4 are key in understanding how we can empty ourselves of those things mentioned in that we do not do them for self-gain or self recognition but we do them to glorify God.
God Bless
Exactly my friend. So many others try to make this into a Trinity proof text rather then an admonition of how to follow in christ's footsteps.January 28, 2007 at 9:31 pm#38425NickHassanParticipantHi,
There are no trinity proof texts.
Trinity cannot be proven from scripture as any trinitarian will agree.
You have to go outside of direct scriptural teaching to preach trinity.
Thus we should not touch it but abhor such filthly things.
Abide in the teachings of Jesus.January 29, 2007 at 1:33 am#38435NickHassanParticipantHi,
Hebrews 2:18
For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
James 1:13
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:So Jesus cannot be our God.
