I looked for the state of being "depressed" or " depression" in scripture and I need your help in finding it. I know the causes and inwhich it leads too. A state of being sad, lowness of spirit, mental and emotional disorders that effects a part of a personality of an individual. Suicidal tendences could also be blamed for "depression" and many other effects as well. ………… Thank You ……….happyman
January 13, 2004 at 4:50 am#137366ProclaimerParticipantThe word 'depressed' is not mentioned in the NIV, NASB, RSV, KJV, Darby, YLT & the WE.
Neither is the word 'depression'. 'Depressions' is mentioned in Leviticus 14:37, but that has a completely different meaning.
The word 'despair' is found in the following scriptures in the NIV version.
Deuteronomy 28:65
Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart.1 Samuel 4:20
As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don't despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.Job 6:14
“A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.Job 6:26
Do you mean to correct what I say, and treat the words of a despairing man as wind?Job 9:23
When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent.Job 15:22
He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword.Psalm 88:15
From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair.Ecclesiastes 2:20
So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.Isaiah 19:9
Those who work with combed flax will despair, the weavers of fine linen will lose hope.Isaiah 61:3
and provide for those who grieve in Zion- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.Jeremiah 14:3
The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns but find no water. They return with their jars unfilled; dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads.Jeremiah 17:16
I have not run away from being your shepherd; you know I have not desired the day of despair. What passes my lips is open before you.Ezekiel 4:16
He then said to me: “Son of man, I will cut off the supply of food in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair,Ezekiel 7:27
The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and by their own standards I will judge them. Then they will know that I am the LORD .”Ezekiel 12:19
Say to the people of the land: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says about those living in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel: They will eat their food in anxiety and drink their water in despair, for their land will be stripped of everything in it because of the violence of all who live there.Joel 1:11
Despair, you farmers, wail, you vine growers; grieve for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field is destroyed.2 Corinthians 1:8
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.2 Corinthians 4:8
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; You could also try searching on 'desolation'.
January 15, 2004 at 8:23 am#137368thehappymanParticipantI found some" Remedies" worth mentioning.
Ps.42:5-11 ….Trust in God
1 Cor.10:13 …Believe God’s Promises
Heb:12:5-11 ..Accept God’s Chastening
1Peter 5:7 …..Cast Your Burdens upon the Lord. Also, I would like to say that this doesn’t mean that depression is caused by God.
It could be a mental condition that millions of people suffer with at no fault of their own.
A person could have alot of bills and go into depression. The decisions we make today will effect our tomarrows. It is quite interesting that millions of Christians suffer depression. Pastor, Elders and teachers. It seems I’m learning more about myself and God on this study. As I have read that people label people as "sinners" ect. because they have depression, or bipolar disease. That is far from the truth. …….happyman
January 15, 2004 at 2:13 pm#137365AnonymousGuestNo one who has PEACE is depressed.
How do you have peace?
Read and believe Ps.119:165!By the way if you eat what the Scriptures tells you too,
your body will produce what it needs to keep you in a right state of mind.Remember the Scriptures says of the Messiah He ate butter and honey so that He would KNOW to choose RIGHTEOUSNESS!
What is this righteousness? Deut.6:25.

December 13, 2004 at 1:11 am#137370NickHassanParticipantHi,
Somewhere in Isaiah it says” put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness” and another helpful one is” I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my strength.”
Depression can only thrive where we take our eyes from the answer and look at the problem-us.
Doubt and fear and self condemnation lead to anxiety and depression but our faith and hope in salvation received is what drives the sails and takes us back eventually into peaceful waters.
Depression is also mentioned in 2 Cor 7
“For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance that is without regret, leading to salvation:but the sorrow of the world produces death”
So if we are saved we are not of the world so God is only using sadness to teach us-but sometimes we are hard of hearing[Heb 5.11]October 14, 2005 at 1:29 am#137371NickHassanParticipantHi,
I think depression is a natural outcome in the natural world. If there is no hope then as you go through life there is nothing to look forward to, to compensate for our degenerating bodies. Many self treat their problems with drugs and alcohol, food and sex.
Knowledge can give some comfort. Joy and hope comes welling up from the fountain of the Spirit of God making the sons of God positive and vibrant people, shining as lights on the hill.May 21, 2007 at 11:14 pm#137372NickHassanParticipantHi not3,
Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Lift up your voice to God. Praise with the Spirit and with understanding. Magnify the Lord.May 22, 2007 at 4:16 am#137373Not3in1ParticipantHe gives me beauty for ashes;
the oil of joy for mourning,
the garment of praise,
for the spirit of heaviness.
That we might be called trees of righteousness;
the planting of the LORD,
that he might be glorified.Yes, thank you Nick for reminding me of an old favorite song that I used to sing often.
And thanks for caring for me……
You're a true brother in Christ, Nick.
Love, MandyFebruary 3, 2008 at 7:06 pm#137374NickHassanParticipantHi,
One of the common fruits of doubt is depression.
Darkness follows close behind unbelief and worry. We are urged to rejoice.
Phil1
25And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;26That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
Phil2
16Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.17Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
18For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
Phil2
25Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.Phil3
1Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord.26For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
27For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
28I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
It is a fruit of the Spirit of God.
Gal5
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
March 21, 2008 at 6:25 pm#137375NickHassanParticipantHi,
Half the world seems to be on prozac.
Loss of faith has led to many being overwhelmed by this evil.
Faith is of grace and we do not have because we do not ask so we should ask and we will receive.Romans 12:3
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.March 21, 2008 at 9:17 pm#137376ShaniaParticipant(hopefully I won't go too long with this one)
I think that there are plenty of words in scripture that can be ascribed to depression, but that is not necessarily what they are always referring to. This one comes to mind:
(the following is all out of Isa 53 )
Isa 53:3
3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows , and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
NIVIsa 53:10
10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
NIVIsa 53:11-12
11 After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light [of life] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
NIVJesus had grief- he was well acquainted with it. But he had joy as well.
11 After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light [of life] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
NIVHeb 12:1-3
let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. [It is marked out- that means that someone has already done it- He has gone before us. He is the firstborn among many bretheren.] 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
NIVHe carried more sorrow than any human possibly could. Why? Because He had the heart of His Father. His sorrow was not about his own suffering- it was about the condition of the hearts of men.
But for the joy set before Him… [that joy was you.]
The joy of YHWH is your strength- what does that mean?
What does YHWH joy in? What is on His heart all the time?
What is the purpose of all this pressure?2 Cor 4:7-18
8 We are hard pressed on every side , but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.[Does this sound easy? Far from it! Were they ever burdened? Did they ever suffer? Absolutely! Do you think that they had grief? They did. However, it was for a purpose- it was in their death that others found life- the joy of the LORD]
13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
[Belief is faith. What is faith? A mystical thing that you build and conjure up? No. It is simple trust and confidence. Have confidence that your Father is in control, knows what He is doing, and has your benefit in mind- along with others. (even though your benefit could be hard to handle)]
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
NIV
Happiness is circumstantial. It is based on what is happening. Joy is eternal.Having said all this, this is just one kind of grief. There is also grief over your own sins. That is ok. This grief brings you to the point of realization: there is no good thing in you. This brings repentance.
Rev 3:16-20
16 So, because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent.
NIVIt says that you have to buy the gold- there is a cost. You have to give up something. [your sin] That is hard at the time, but you are in a much better condition afterwards- you have Him. What better outcome is there? Another thing- this is all because He loves you. [19]
Heb 12:5-7
5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:“My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons.
NIVThere are other kinds of grief.. I am not saying that these are the only ones.
I am not making a blanket judgement on the depressed ones of this world… I am simply bringing encouragement that there is hope. Have trust in your Father. He loves you. Run to Him in the good times and the bad times. Also, try to find good, believing friends who will stand with you and support you. Know that He has given you something that circumstances can never take away- salvation.
