I'll try to keep this simple (not my strongest point)
We live on a planet where Arctic ice is receding more than ever before, the oceans are increasingly acidic, ecosystems are starting to collapse and climatic regions are starting to shift. At the same time human population is still growing, key resources are becoming increasingly scarce and no nation state is taking responsibility or doing anything about it (let alone people as a species).
How many here admit the possibility that in the coming years there will come a day where your only concern is what your next meal is going to be and how you will get it?
Of those who do admit the possibility, what do you intend to do about it? (I'm looking for sensible answers other than sitting around waiting for some external entity to solve your problems)

Serioulsy though, education is the key. Teaching our children to not take for granted the earth's gifts; reduce, reuse, recycle.
Some things seem beyond the people's control – it will take world-wide powers to make the changing differences. I think it will happen, it will just happen too late.

When the population got too large for an area to handle one of these forces would come to fore. Science and technology modified the mix by increasing food production and treating illnessess allowing for an ever increasing population. Attempts at self limiting our natural increase in numbers has ever failed. Even a brutal authoritarian government like China couldn't do it. So where do we go? It is apparent if we do not want famine and war to do it we must invest in science and technology to increase the ability of current home (earth) to produce food, energy and deal with waste. Conservation helps but is never a solution only a temporary remediation. Really long term we need to look as human populations always have and that is migration and where is there left but the stars? So the only way out of our problem is to invest and promote science and technology.

We are heading towards the flat part of the curve as we begin to run out of food capacity and start to die in our own waste products. Science and technology are our hope. It will be driven by the economics as always, but the disparity between rich and poor will continue to grow, so the technology may only be able to save the rich end.

That is giving up and surrendering your stewardship of the planet to destruction. If the so called rapture is real it could be next week or it could be a million years hence. In the mean time it is our duty to take care of creation; as a Christian that is an obligation I believe as God's stewards here on earth. You haven't been called off the job yet.July 24, 2009 at 10:36 pm#138768StuParticipantQuote (942767 @ July 25 2009,09:16) The rapture is the only solution. Love in Christ,

I'd be interested to know what you think is causing the problems people are perceiving in this thread, if you think a supernatural event is the answer.Stuart
