    Matthew 6:22-23Young’s Literal Translation (YLT)

22 `The lamp of the body is the eye, if, therefore, thine eye may be perfect, all thy body shall be enlightened,
23 but if thine eye may be evil, all thy body shall be dark; if, therefore, the light that [is] in thee is darkness — the darkness, how great!

Mt. 6:22 if your eye is good (=if you are generous)
Mt. 6:23 if your eye is evil (=if you are stingy)

    Hi KW,

    Why ADD to scripture

    What is written is true

    Hi KW,

ADDING TO and TAKING AWAY from scripture is unwise.

    men cannot improve truth

    Nick,

You are denying Scripture. Since I doubt you take the words “thine eye may be perfect” to mean you have to have 20/20 vision to have you whole body have a light shining on it you are aware on some level what you are doing.

    Hi KW,

Those in Christ can see with his eyes.

They can discern as he did.

     No idiom or alliteration involved.

     SAtay within truth

    Nick,

What you say is not what is written.

You know yourself that Jesus did not always speak clearly for his disciples stated:

John 16:29Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

on one of those cases he chose to speak clearly.

When his students asked why he did not speak clearly at times he said:

Matthew 13:10-11Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Matthew 6:22-23 is one place he chose not to.

    Hi KW ,

Because Jesus spoke divine wisdom appreciated only by the spiritually enlightened gives you no right to deny what is written and call it only idiom.

    Nick,

Jesus uses idiom and other ways to hide the truth from those that are not seeking God and God’s righteousness.

    Merriam-Webster online dictionary’s (idiom)

2: an expression in the usage of a language that is peculiar to itself either grammatically (as no, it wasn’t me) or in having a meaning that cannot be derived from the conjoined meanings of its elements (as ride herd on for “supervise”)

thine eye may be perfect, all thy body shall be enlightened,

If a man looks on the world with envy then he is envious.
If a man looks on the world with love then he is loving.
If a man looks on the world with hate then he is hateful.

Jesus could have chosen to say it but instead choose not to. It is quite possible that the Jews to whom he was speaking and the early church understood these words but just as the language has changed so has the way of speaking of the people.

Flesh and blood is used as a idiom in English and has a similar meaning though perhaps not exactly the same as it can be speaking of the “natural” limitations of the current body. The body human beings and other parts of creation were created in had different limitations as nature was not the same then.

    Hi KW,

Flesh and blood will not inherit the kingdom.

Playing with these words will not help you

    Hi KW,

You confuse your theology with truth.

It is not in the same ballpark

    HiKW,

You even choose to speak for Jesus  ?

You put words in his mouth as if you own deeper wisdom??

    Amazing attitude

    Nick,

Flesh and blood CANNOT enter the kingdom.

You have been taught to take that literally and choose to believe it as the truth has been hidden from you. It is the Spirit that must lead you the truth I merely repeat the words I have been given.

    Hi KW,

So you have the right to assay what is literal in scripture and what is not?

The Spirit teaches those who listen. I am still learning but I have learned some things and am confident of them.

Yes we know of your confidence

     But what is it’s foundation?

     SDA theology?

    Nick,

SDA theology was a thing of my youth. They taught me untruths and half truths as is common with the vast majority of those that claim to be Christians.

What I am learning and have learned comes because I desire to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. I do not believe that men must sin or even men will sin as such teaching are for those that love darkness but want to be consoled even as they indulge in their love of sin.

    Hi KW,

How many other truths have you diminished by consigning them to IDIOM?
