Is “evening and morning” proof of 24-hour days in Genesis?

Terraforming Earth

Genesis 1:5
And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day.

The words ‘evening’ and ‘morning’ doesn’t necessarily mean a literal 24 hour day. Context is key here. A day to God is clearly not a day as we record it, so why do some always see these things from their point of view? Is it not meant to be how God sees it? First off, God is NOT bound to earth and its cycles. Not even the heavens can contain him.

Secondly, there are other verses in the Bible that talk about evening and morning that are not 24 hour days.

Psalm 90:6
In the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.

This shows a metaphor for life’s brevity and not a strict 24-hour reference, but a beginning and end.

Ecclesiastes 11:6
In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand…

Again, this is figurative, meaning to be diligent from start to finish.

As for literal vs figurative meanings in the Bible, you can pick out numerous examples. Take the verses that say that the Son of Man has a two-edged sword coming out of his mouth. Do you think that it is an actual sword like a samurai? Perhaps that is figurative like much of the Bible?

Jesus even said it himself, he spoke in parables. Taking everything literally is carnal thinking. Only a spiritually minded person can discern the scriptures and it is written this way so the wicked will not understand.

Daniel 12:10
Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand.

Proverbs 28:5
Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the Lord understand it completely.

Matthew 13:10–11
Then the disciples came and said to him, ‘Why do you speak to them in parables?’
And he answered them, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.’

Matthew 13:13
This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

1 Corinthians 2:14
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

You might not realise it, but Christians who insist on this interpretation can create a stumbling block for people who understand science. It leads some to dismiss the Bible as little more than myth. In the real world, this can mean people miss the opportunity for salvation because of a misguided representation of the truth.

Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks. Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come.

Your version of events has God not creating the heavens and earth at the beginning, but the beginning starting at Day 1. And the whole thing was water and he separated the water so that the universe could exist inside. After all that, God rested for 24 hours. And the first couple or few days were also 24 hours, even before the Sun was created.

Honestly, I shouldn’t be even debating this stupidity IMO, but the fact that so many believe that rubbish is the reason I engage at all.

Of course you are free to believe and teach whatever you want. But I always think about what this is doing to others. Is it placing a stumbling block? Is is a lie. Is to foolishness. These are pertinent questions I think we should all consider. How about really thinking about the following logic.

    1)
I wonder if it is possible for you to understand that the Hebrew word yom (day) is flexible. Even in Genesis 1 and 2 it is not used only as a strict 24 hour period.

In Genesis 1, you have “evening and morning, the first day… second day…” etc.
But in Genesis 2:4 the same word is used to show that the whole of creation was created in one day which you by reason of your own argument would have to conclude is 24 hours which then directly contradicts your own belief in 6 x 24 hour days. This is a case of your own formula proving you wrong.

“These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.”

Here “in the day” clearly means the whole creation period, not a single 24 hour day. So I wonder if you are able to think about the application of the word ‘day’ and see that it might not be the primitive interpretation that you support?

    2)
Have read how the Bible directly teaches that God’s relationship to time is different from ours?

“For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.”

“One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

    Pretty clear is it not?

    3)
If you insist on “six 24 hour days”, you have to answer: twenty four hour days measured by what, since you claim the Sun was created in Day Four. I mean, think about how silly you come across making these sorts of arguments to people who might be searching for the truth of God and end up listening to your witness.

The biggest issue with the Bible is not the Bible, but the myriad of false teachings that people claim is in the Bible.

Your view that there was a blob of water and God separated two layers of it and made a universe in between that contains at least trillions of suns and planets, and billions of galaxies and all in 24 hour days created everything with the Sun coming on Day Four, and then resting on Day Seven for 24 hours seems quite mythical don’t you think? I mean, you are saying that the time God created all these trillions of stars and planets equals the day that God made plants on one of those planets.

    Lol.

Gen 1:14And God says, “Let luminaries be in the expanse of the heavens,

It says it right there. The expanse has waters above it and below it.

Regarding your “lol”, your “How about really thinking about the following logic”…

I think this addresses the value of your “logic”:

Matt 11:25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants.

1 Cor 2:14 But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

If your scientists are stumbling over scripture, why are you surprised?

Is not your God that you speak about to your scientists, supernatural? Anything supernatural goes against logic. Are you bowing down to your science book or scripture that is God-breathed and above logic?

I think it is amazing that God made even one sun in 24 hours actually, btw, I have never insisted in 24 hours. I haven’t denied it either, I don’t see the word “hours” anywhere in the Genesis account of creation. The creation account speaks about several evenings and mornings, light and darkness, and days…not one mention of hours. Pay attention to the supernatural aspect of the creation, that would be a better focus, imo, than how many hours it took. You may be the one who is misleading. But thank you for your concern.
