It is clear that the mainstream media today mostly consists of leftists who often disparage the Bible and any notion of God. The latest case in point is a scientific study asserting that some human remains of the Canaanites dating back to 3,700 years ago have similar DNA to modern day Lebanese. Thus the Bible is wrong because it says that the ancient Canaanites were completely destroyed.
Deuteronomy 20:16
You shall not leave alive anything that breathes. But you shall utterly destroy them.
Headlines in the media included:
- “Study disproves the Bible’s suggestion that the ancient Canaanites were wiped out”
- “New DNA study casts doubt on Bible claim”
- “Canaanites Weren’t Annihilated by Ancient Israelites After All”
- “Study disproves the Bible’s claim that the ancient Canaanites were wiped out”
- “The Bible got it wrong: Ancient Canaanites survived and their DNA lives in modern-day Lebanese”
To give a quick backstory here, God’s patience with the Canaanites had run out because of their increasing sin and wickedness. God finally intervened in order to end this wicked culture which showed no signs of abating, and so wouldn’t continue to spread and infect more people. To put this in context, we first need to understand God’s motives when it comes to the wicked:
Ezekiel 18:23
‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live’…
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
So if God wanted this culture to come to an end, was the Bible wrong then, when the scientific community has evidence of Canaanite DNA among the Lebanese people?
No the Bible is not wrong. Read for yourself what actually happened:
27 But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.
28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.
29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.
31 Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.
32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.
33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.
It is typical of the mainstream media to jump to the conclusion that the Bible is wrong again. They spread these lies to their readers who in turn often tell others these lies giving rise to the disbelief often witnessed today. Of course, they only need to study the Bible a bit deeper to find the truth. But in reality such diligent work is for the righteous, not the wicked.
2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
