    HERESIES – ANCIENT & MODERN

by Selwyn Stevens “Fatal Faiths – The Cult Counterfeits of Christianity”

Page 35. “Virtually all heresies with any relevance to Christianity relate to the nature of Jesus Christ, the personality of the Holy Spirit, or requirements for Salvation. Indeed the first four major Councils of the Christian Church were called together specifically to deal with the major heresies of their time.

Let us look briefly at the major ones starting with those about the nature of Christ. There are three main streams of heretical thinking. Christians understand that the Bible shows Jesus as 100% God and also 100% man at the same time. One heretical stream denies the deity of Jesus; the second denies His humanity; while the third stream confuses His duel nature of both deity and humanity together. The issues are very important, so it isn’t a case of disputing over words, but these heresies strike at the very foundation of Christian beliefs. That may explain why these heresies are opposed so strongly by Bible-believing Christians.

    The Arian Heresy

This belief is a denial of the eternalness or divinity of Jesus Christ, which was originally promoted by Arius of Alexandria. The council of Nicaea in 325 condemned this teaching as a heresy, primarily because Athanasius, also of Alexandria, was able to show from the Scriptures that Jesus was one substance with the Father so His divinity was beyond question. This view was later confirmed by the church Council of Constantinople in 381. The Arian heresy largely faded after that, but has resurfaced in recent times in cults such as the Unitarians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christadelphians, The Way International, Children of God, Theosophy and others.

    Hi Davidl,

Jesus of Nazareth was anointed by God with the holy Spirit and power.

The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.

    But the flesh contributes nothing.

We men can follow such a man.

    Hi DavidL,

Confused men would try to separate God from His own Spirit and call the Spirit another person.

    Shun such folly

You know…theological arguments against the Trinity can sometimes seem quite convincing, but no matter how right they sound – the Godhead (Father, Son and Holy Spirit = One God) is simply a reality…a reality that we accept in our spirits by revelation when we are born again…and it’s not until some self-proclaimed teachers start twisting the Scriptures to say what they want it to say, that doubts begin to rise in peoples minds – the same way that the serpent’s reasoning made Eve begin to question God’s Word in the garden…

Hear the Near Death Experience of a former atheist who encountered the reality of the Trinity – this is an awesome testimony that helps expose the fallacies of cult teachings found on this web site…

    Hi Davidl,

Should we not have serious doubts about teachings that cannot be found in the bible but only in the mouths of men?

    Whom are we following?

“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 11:3

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.” – Ephesians 5:6

“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies [knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning] and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body, and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;” – Colossians 2:9

“speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.” – 2 Peter 3:16

“I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book;and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.” – Revelation 22:18,19

Yes Nick – we should have serious doubts about many things taught on this web site… because they stem from the MIND of man, and are contrary to the revealed truth of Scripture..

Did any of the books of the OT teach a trinity?

Did Jesus, or Paul or Peter etc?

Then why would anyone defend it?

But he never claimed to be a god of any kind.

    Hi davidl,

    You say

..”and are contrary to the revealed truth of Scripture.”

Then you should show us what scripture teaches about a trinity God.

Inference is not useful so show us the plain teaching

I have spent much time in the past debating this issue on this site – giving much Scripture reference…but it’s pointless trying to communicate spiritual realities with people if they are not born again…

Surely you must know that John declares the Word was God…?!

Thomas worships Jesus calling Him both Lord and God..?!

Jesus declares He and the Father are ONE..?!

All these are the plain Scriptures without any human reasoning applied to them in an effort to change their meaning…but the more you look, the more you find the trinity embedded throughout the whole Bible right from Genesis I…”Let us make man in our image..” etc, etc, etc…

But really Nick if you are not born again I can only expect that you will just come up with all the old arguments so often found on this site…

Jesus testifies that the one he calls God is the ONLY TRUE GOD. Do you believe it when Jesus calls “the father” The ONLY TRUE GOD? If you do believe what Jesus said wouldn’t that make Jesus and every other being anything else but God?

Secondly you mention Thomas calling Jesus “God” what you did not manage to notice was no one else responded that way at the time so wouldn’t be possible for Thomas to say that because what he witnessed was astonishing sort of like when the viper bit paul: Acts 28:6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

Now you would easily agree that Paul was not/is not a god, am i right? now if it was a well known fact to his disciples that Jesus was “God” why would they then declare Acts 2:22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.

Now we are not talking about a moment of surprise we are talking about an actual prepared statement in front of everyone and yet they make it ABSOLUTELY clear that this was a MAN.

Now as far a John 1:1 you seem to make the most common mistake of all which is to allow this chapter to coincide somehow with Genesis simply because it says “In the beginning” but what you misunderstand is John is talking about the beginning of his Gospel and we can know this because he says and the Word became Flesh, if this was “The beginning” in context to Genesis that Flesh would have been Adam but the fact is “In the beginning” of the Gospel Mary is told that she will be with child and God made this possible simply by command(without intercourse or help of any kind) so the Word did become Flesh at that time not at the beginning of time since at mans beginning the breath of God was breathed in him and not by command.

Jesus said the Father and I are one but he also said John 14:20 At that day you shall know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

That would make everyone God by your logic otherwise me and my Father are one is a statement of Unity not divinity

and Finally keep this in mind: Matthew 12:32
Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

again if your logic holds true about a trinity it allows for the Trinity God to be blasphemed because this is a paradox, Jesus who you say is 1 part of the trinity declares he is allowed to be blasphemed but the Holy Spirit which is 1 part cannot be blasphemed
