You are free to interpret Jesus according to the interpretation of unbelievers in the previous verse or you can consider that Abraham was made a father of many nations and Jesus is first among such fathers for through humans are born of the Spirit. His audience are Jews who acknowledge Abraham was made a father of many nation.
