Hi One Spirit and Nick,Quote A man who makes his own law is his own god. Your faith does not rest in anyone, or anything, outside of yourself. As long as that is your conscious decision, go for it. Just don't expect YHWH-fearing people to join you.Are you God, that you know my heart? Don't you interpret the Bible how you think best, and…[Read more]

Hi Nick,Quote Just wondering how you understand salvation. Turning from darkness towards the light (short answer).Hi David,Quote If I believe in God but not the Bible, I can do what I FEEL is right, and not what God says I should do. How convenient. It is convenient – and just as convenient to use the Bible to justify self-interested behaviour -…[Read more]

Oh Nick, are you trying to prove that we can't be saved unless we believe that the Bible is infallible?

Hi Nick,In this passage, Peter preached Jesus to the Jews who were gathered in Jerusalem for the festival.I'm still not sure what you're getting at?

Hi Nick,Can you spell it out for me?

I'm not sure I understand the relevance?

Hi guys,So much water has passed under the bridge that I feel almost guilty to hearken back to the discussion of yesterday. Well, not really 😉Quote You have the floor. Your call.Hooray! Well, I guess I'd call faith – in the Biblical sense – a gut feeling, or an unexplained conviction. In this sense, I see faith as resting on what a person has…[Read more]

Hi Nick,When you say faith, do you mean a belief system, or “the evidence of things unseen”?
Casiphus replied to the topic old and new in the forum Scriptural Teachings 19 years, 1 month ago
Hi Nick,I hope you'll forgive me if I choose not to debate the infallibility of the Bible according to the argument that “the Spirit of God told me so.”
Casiphus replied to the topic old and new in the forum Scriptural Teachings 19 years, 1 month ago
Hi Nick,Do you ask this because I don't believe in the infallibility of the Bible?
Casiphus replied to the topic old and new in the forum Scriptural Teachings 19 years, 1 month ago
Which call is that?

Hi,Seeing as my last post received such an overwhelming response 😉Quote So to you human authorship of the bible is paramount? Surely you realise that the glorious purity, harmony and unity of the Word is amazing evidence of the work of God among men?To me human authorship is a given – many battle technologies, forms of governance as well as some…[Read more]

Hi Eliyah,Quote Hebrew was the language of Judah and Galilee in the first century. Its sister language, Aramaic, remained the secondary tongue and the language of commerce. Jews in this area were not Greek-speaking. Their revulsion to the Greeks and the Greek language derives from the fact that the Maccabees had just defeated the Greeks and…[Read more]

Hi Nick and One Spirit,I suppose you both agree on the Mosaic authorship of Deuteronomy (and the majority of the Torah)? If so, I presume this helps confirm a belief that the Bible is inerrant?I don't really believe either of the above premises, so I tend to view passages such as the one quoted by OS as key insights into the beliefs of the author…[Read more]

Hi Nick,I hope you won't be offended by this question, but do you ever have an opinion that isn't based on one or another Bible passage?
Casiphus replied to the topic old and new in the forum Scriptural Teachings 19 years, 1 month ago
The one quoted by One Spirit in particular, but really all those pertaining to the relationship between the Israelites and Yahweh, and how each party viewed that relationship.
Casiphus replied to the topic old and new in the forum Scriptural Teachings 19 years, 1 month ago
Hi One Spirit and Nick,At the risk of sounding contrary:Who do you think was the author of this passage, and what do you think it meant to them?I ask this, because I think we have vastly different approaches to scriptural interpretation.
Casiphus replied to the topic old and new in the forum Scriptural Teachings 19 years, 1 month ago
The whole episode really – the Israelites show a decided lack of willingness to commune with God, and tell Moses mediate between them and God. They then used the law as an outward appearance of righteousness, offering lipservice, rather than showing a deep-seated desire to commune with God and their neighbours.

Hi Nick,Perhaps I am too devious for my own good! Actually, I was hoping you would further explore the comparison between Abraham's faith as righteousness, and the Israelites' unbelief and subsequent subjection to the law.

Hi Nick,Quote The Law was given to show some boundaries to help consciences function but the real hope of God was for men to see the Spirit of the Law and live again according to His ways. Few did. He sent His Son filled with His Spirit to fulfill the demands of the Law and die for us so that all who are reborn into Him are free from the Law of…[Read more]
