How do you define faith and why?
January 10, 2009 at 10:17 pm#117123TiffanyParticipantMartian
Faith is believing the Word of God and all it's promises, for believing it; without seeing those promises. You take it on the Word of God only.

So do you think faith is a matter of mental excersize. Something you do in your head?January 10, 2009 at 11:07 pm#117126martianParticipantPerhaps I should specify — What is faith in God?

Paul says, faith comes from hearing of the Word of God. It is the hearing of the Word, and believing what you hear that causes you to have faith in the one who gave us the Word, God. Consequently you believe what the Word promises; that is faith.

That does not define faith. Where it comes from does not determine what it is.
Is faith the same in the OT and the NT?
What does the word faith mean in Hebrew?January 11, 2009 at 5:09 pm#117189martianParticipantBehold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:4 – ASV)
What does it mean to have “faith” from an Hebraic perspective? In our western minds faith is a mental exercise in knowing that someone or something exists or will act. For instance, if we say “I have faith in God” we are saying “I know that God exists and do what he says he will do”.
The Hebrew word for faith is hnwma (emunah – Strong's #530) and is an action oriented word meaning “support”. This is important because the Western concept of faith places the action on the one you have faith in, such as “faith in God”. But, the Hebrew word hnwma places the action on the one who “supports God”. It is not knowing that God will act, but rather I will do what I can to support God. This idea of support for the word emunah can be seen in Exodus 17:12.
But Moses' hands grew weary; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat upon it, and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; so his hands were steady (emunah)until the going down of the sun.
It is the support/emunah of Aaron and Hur that held of Moses' arms, not the support/emunah of Moses. When we say “I have faith in God”, we should be thinking “I will do what I can to support God”. In the previous verse we see the support of God being a support for the plan of God.
Unfortunately, in the Western mind, faith is something dependant upon on God. We say we have faith, but often have a mental exercise that we call faith.
Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:4 – ASV)
In this verse the word “righteous” literally means to stay on the right path. With these two definitions in mind look at this verse again.
but those that stay on the right pats shall live by supporting God and his plan..
This is real faith. In discussions on this board there are many “so-called” doctrines that do nothing to support or bring about God’s plan for His creation. The first question we should all ask of a doctrine is “How does it help me complete God’s plan for my life?”January 11, 2009 at 6:11 pm#117197GeneBalthropParticipantMartian……Faith (IS) the substance of things Hoped for , the (EVIDENCE) of things (NOT) seen. Where is you Evidence of something you can't see. GOD the invisible GOD must demonstrate something in your life in order for you to see the unseen. The apostles word were confirmed by the Signs that followed them, and what did Jesus say would follow His disciples were they not signs. Signs the unseen GOD gives His Chosen ones. Even Jesus was confirmed by Miracles . (EVIDENCE) is requires for true Faith. Its just that when God gives these evidences some forget them. Read the parable of the unjust Judge.

Of course there are false miracles.
Our faith should not rest on them.January 11, 2009 at 6:49 pm#117204martianParticipantQuote (Gene Balthrop @ Jan. 12 2009,05:11) Martian……Faith (IS) the substance of things Hoped for , the (EVIDENCE) of things (NOT) seen. In otherwords, there is fruit from faith. When you work to support God's plan in your life there is definate fruit in your life. Doctrines like sprinkling babies and triune Gods produce no fruit. They are not of faith.January 15, 2009 at 4:01 pm#117698martianParticipantSo what does it mean to cooperate/work with God? How do we do that?
Give examples if you can.January 15, 2009 at 5:31 pm#117705GeneBalthropParticipantmartian…….i have had many prayers answered in my life so far, many great miracles i have experiences of His unseen hand many times, in fact some times it gives me some fear , because i believe i have no excuse for not obeying Him. What i have noticed is what most people call Faith is really just supposition, they suppose their is a GOD by what they have been told or taught from child hood, but that does not prove or disprove God is in their life, in order for that to happen there needs to be tangible (PROOF)or EVIDENCE in order to build a relationship based on true Faith. God must produce some Proof. I believe the parable of the unjust Judge pretty much describes it.
