Perhaps an American speaker could help me with the expression “Carnival Barker” as used recently by your esteemed President.
I gather that carnival barkers are people who attract attention to publicise events, but it must also be a metaphor for publicity seekers in general.
Can anyone tell me how the expression is used commonly, or give examples of who else (apart from Donald Trump) might be accused of being one?

Stu…. Carnival Barker is a dated expression used to identify the likes of a ringmaster or a snake oil salesmenn and in general any one who is peddling their wares by means of shouting or out shouting another …..(Ladies and Gentlemen and Kids of all ages)….It is funny that the usurper decided to represent a legitimate concern or question of his credentials with that of a circus….There is much contemp in his retort and on the other hand alot of questions still remain unanswered….April 30, 2011 at 3:58 am#244870StuParticipantQuote (theodorej @ April 30 2011,02:39) Quote (Stu @ April 29 2011,16:43) Perhaps an American speaker could help me with the expression “Carnival Barker” as used recently by your esteemed President. Thanks for that, theodorej. I thought it might have been considered a bit dated, and Ed filled me in on the tendency to use in a political context.Regarding its recent use, are you one of the birthers?
Clearly he is American, unless you don't count Hawaii, but what relevance would it have to you even if the incumbent had not been born in the US but had been naturalised?

May 4, 2011 at 1:25 am#245249mikeboll64BlockedHi Princess,
A “birther” is a member of the group of people currently trying to de-legitamize the Presidency of Barak Obama, claiming he is not a natural-born U.S. citizen. Our constitution states that no man can be President unless he was born on U.S. soil, which is why the Governator will never be the Presinator.

Many parties are forming as of late to rally against the President, perhaps tis the reason why Bin Laden is where he is at, if he is there at all.
Blessings Mike.

I didn't think I would have to explain American to an American…I thought it was me who was getting the lessons! But since you are royalty, perhaps you do not mix with the proletariate who are mangulating the language in these ways.
Anyway, my impression is the same as Mike's.
Did these birthers have a different opinion when W. was sworn in, even though Gore had won the election?

Re: Gore, I understand the re-count was deemed correct.
See Stuart, 'wherever reasonable' kingdoms do still exists.
Take care of yourself.

perhaps, humanity would better suit, or mankind re: creation. Why would the creator make man and woman? Oh, the man needed a mate, he was alone and it was not good for man to be alone. They can't live without us. Unless of course, you want to retreat to the roof of the house.

So a god can be whatever you want it to be. So why do people make truth claims for the christian god when anyone else can just deny the claim because they consider that the christian god is the vase on their breakfast table?Or the teapot in orbit around the sun.
