Where is the Messiah of Israel, sitting on David’s throne, having destroyed her enemies and ruling the earth? They had no concept of their Messiah being the Son of God, a Pagan-human sacrifice, leaving to the throne in heaven as God.The Jews had false expectations about the material Messiah. Those false ideas were then transposed into a future return, the new wine was put into old wine skins, a new theology evolved; the spiritual kingdom of heaven that Jesus established failed and became the visible Christian Church.
Concepts of the Expected Messiah
(1509.3) 136:1.1 The Jews entertained many ideas about the expected deliverer, and each of these different schools of Messianic teaching was able to point to statements in the Hebrew scriptures as proof of their contentions. In a general way, the Jews regarded their national history as beginning with Abraham and culminating in the Messiah and the new age of the kingdom of God. In earlier times they had envisaged this deliverer as “the servant of the Lord,” then as “the Son of Man,” while latterly some even went so far as to refer to the Messiah as the “Son of God.” But no matter whether he was called the “seed of Abraham” or “the son of David,” all were agreed that he was to be the Messiah, the “anointed one.” Thus did the concept evolve from the “servant of the Lord” to the “son of David,” “Son of Man,” and “Son of God.”
(1509.4) 136:1.2 In the days of John and Jesus the more learned Jews had developed an idea of the coming Messiah as the perfected and representative Israelite, combining in himself as the “servant of the Lord” the threefold office of prophet, priest, and king.
(1509.5) 136:1.3 The Jews devoutly believed that, as Moses had delivered their fathers from Egyptian bondage by miraculous wonders, so would the coming Messiah deliver the Jewish people from Roman domination by even greater miracles of power and marvels of racial triumph. The rabbis had gathered together almost five hundred passages from the Scriptures which, notwithstanding their apparent contradictions, they averred were prophetic of the coming Messiah. And amidst all these details of time, technique, and function, they almost completely lost sight of the personality of the promised Messiah. They were looking for a restoration of Jewish national glory — Israel’s temporal exaltation — rather than for the salvation of the world. It therefore becomes evident that Jesus of Nazareth could never satisfy this materialistic Messianic concept of the Jewish mind. Many of their reputed Messianic predictions, had they but viewed these prophetic utterances in a different light, would have very naturally prepared their minds for a recognition of Jesus as the terminator of one age and the inaugurator of a new and better dispensation of mercy and salvation for all nations.
(1510.1) 136:1.4 The Jews had been brought up to believe in the doctrine of the Shekinah. But this reputed symbol of the Divine Presence was not to be seen in the temple. They believed that the coming of the Messiah would effect its restoration. They held confusing ideas about racial sin and the supposed evil nature of man. Some taught that Adam’s sin had cursed the human race, and that the Messiah would remove this curse and restore man to divine favor. Others taught that God, in creating man, had put into his being both good and evil natures; that when he observed the outworking of this arrangement, he was greatly disappointed, and that “He repented that he had thus made man.” And those who taught this believed that the Messiah was to come in order to redeem man from this inherent evil nature.
(1510.2) 136:1.5 The majority of the Jews believed that they continued to languish under Roman rule because of their national sins and because of the halfheartedness of the gentile proselytes. The Jewish nation had not wholeheartedly repented; therefore did the Messiah delay his coming. There was much talk about repentance; wherefore the mighty and immediate appeal of John’s preaching, “Repent and be baptized, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” And the kingdom of heaven could mean only one thing to any devout Jew: The coming of the Messiah.
(1510.3) 136:1.6 There was one feature of the bestowal of Michael which was utterly foreign to the Jewish conception of the Messiah, and that was the union of the two natures, the human and the divine. The Jews had variously conceived of the Messiah as perfected human, superhuman, and even as divine, but they never entertained the concept of the union of the human and the divine. And this was the great stumbling block of Jesus’ early disciples. They grasped the human concept of the Messiah as the son of David, as presented by the earlier prophets; as the Son of Man, the superhuman idea of Daniel and some of the later prophets; and even as the Son of God, as depicted by the author of the Book of Enoch and by certain of his contemporaries; but never had they for a single moment entertained the true concept of the union in one earth personality of the two natures, the human and the divine. The incarnation of the Creator in the form of the creature had not been revealed beforehand. It was revealed only in Jesus; the world knew nothing of such things until the Creator Son was made flesh and dwelt among the mortals of the realm.” UB

July 17, 2012 at 2:19 pm#333329SpockParticipantOn the editing and rewriting of the OT books during the captivity:
(1068.3) 97:7.3 These Hebrew priests and scribes had a single idea in their minds, and that was the rehabilitation of the Jewish nation, the glorification of Hebrew traditions, and the exaltation of their racial history. If there is resentment of the fact that these priests have fastened their erroneous ideas upon such a large part of the Occidental world, it should be remembered that they did not intentionally do this; they did not claim to be writing by inspiration; they made no profession to be writing a sacred book. They were merely preparing a textbook designed to bolster up the dwindling courage of their fellows in captivity. They were definitely aiming at improving the national spirit and morale of their compatriots. It remained for later-day men to assemble these and other writings into a guide book of supposedly infallible teachings.
July 17, 2012 at 10:47 pm#333330mikeboll64BlockedQuote (Colter @ July 16 2012,21:25) He had thoroughly considered the idea of the Jewish Messiah and was firmly convinced that he was not to be that Messiah. He knew he would never sit on the throne of David at Jerusalem.
Neither did he believe that his mission was that of a spiritual deliverer or moral teacher solely to the Jewish people.
All of these things are directly contradicted by scripture, Colter.July 17, 2012 at 11:52 pm#333331SpockParticipantJesus left without fulfilling the misguided hopes of the Jewish people. The scripture disagrees with Jesus, the scripture contradicts itself.
In the coming ages the d concepts of a material kingdom will fade away as believers adopt the original teachings of the original gospel wherein God is the king of a spiritual kingdom and rules per say in spirit.
The early apostles and disciples seemed to believe that Jesus was “soon to return” . That's really a false hope which obscures the very fact that Christ is present to us here and now.

errrm, Jesus fullfilled some of the shaddowy references to the coming Son. So yes, there was enough there to lead the Israelites to expect, what they thought was a “deliverer”. That reminds me, ya know, the elite priest class were often the target of the railings of the prophets. The “leaders” in the various ages of the various prophets were none to happy about some of what they had to say….when they said it. The records of the prophets were incorporated into the histories of the Hebrews AFTER they livedAs exaggerated and inaccurate as the OT histories are, they did serve a purpose.

Sure it Can, because the Jews had a number of other expectations (based on the scripture) that did NOT come true in Jesus. Christians just gloss over that stuff. For starters:
Ezekiel 37:26-28: Build the Third Temple
Isaiah 43:5-6: Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel
Isaiah 2:4: Usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred, oppression, suffering and disease. “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore.”
Zechariah 14:9: Spread universal knowledge of the G-d of Israel – uniting the entire human race as one: “G-d will be King over all the world—on that day, G-d will be One and His Name will be One”
Jesus fulfilled none of these messianic prophecies. Additionally:
Jesus was not a prophet. Prophecy could only exist in Israel when the land is inhabited by a majority of world Jewry. During the time of Ezra (~300 BCE) the majority of Jews refused to move from Babylon to Israel, thus prophecy ended upon the death of the last prophets (Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi).
Jesus appeared on the scene approximately 350 years after prophecy had ended.
Jesus was not descended from King David. Per Genesis 49:10 and Isaiah 11:1, the Messiah must be descended on his father's side from King David. However, according to the Christian claim that Jesus was the product of a virgin birth, he had no father — and thus could not have possibly fulfilled the messianic requirement of being descended on his father's side from King David! The Christian idea of a virgin birth is derived from a verse in Isaiah describing an “alma” as giving birth. The word “alma” has always meant a young woman, but Christian theologians came centuries later and translated it as “virgin.”
This accords Jesus' birth with the first century pagan idea of mortals being impregnated by G-ds.
Tradition teaches that the Messiah will lead the Jewish people to full Torah observance. Deut. 13:1-4 states that all mitzvahs remain binding forever, and anyone coming to change the Torah is immediately identified as a false prophet. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus contradicts the Torah and states its commandments are no longer applicable. (John 1:45 and 9:16, Acts 3:22 and 7:37)
There's more.

If you only care to study Mat.ch 24. I know you will not bother.Let me qoute a few scriptures for you.
Mat ch.24.
4. Take heed that no man deceive you.5. For many shall come in my name, saying I am Christ; and shall deceive many.(its happening).
6. And ye shall hear of wars and roumors of wars see that ye not be troubled: FOR ALL THESE THINGS MUST COME TO PASS,BUT THE END IS NOT YET.(wars happening for years now).
7. For nation shall rise against nation, and and kingdom against kingdom; and and there shall be famine, and pe
stilences and earth quakes,in divers places.(happening for a while now).8.All these are the beginning of sorrows.(just the beginning of sorrows).
11. And many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many.(happening)
14. AND THIS GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE PREACHED IN ALL THE WORLD FOR A WITNESS UNTO ALL NATIONS; —AND THEN THE END SHALL COME.(its done today).
(this gospel: not the UB teachings; OK.).21. For then shall be great tribulation,SUCH AS WAS NOT SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD TO THIS TIME,NO, NOR EVER SHALL BE.(coming soon).
22. And except those days should be shortened, there SHOULD NO FLESH BE SAVED,BUT FOR THE ELECT SAKE,THOSE DAYS SHALL BE SHORTENED.(only todays wars can obliterate the eath).(not bows and spears).
24. For there shall arise false christs and false prophets, and shall show GREAT SIGNS AND WONDERS; insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.(this will be the days of the false prophet: 2thess.2:8.9.).its coming.
29. all the signs before the coming:
30. And then shall appear the sign of the son of man in heaven—-
HERE HE IS; BUT NOT BEFORE ALL THOSE THINGS HAS HAPPENED,FOR THIS GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE
PREACHED FIRST. (today this gospel is preached in all the
world, just for a witness, for they have not reached the truth yet).in the 1000yr kingdom the whole truth will be reached.HIS ACTUAL COMING:
Rev.19:11.And I saw heaven open, and behold ,a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called faithfull and true, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. (against the unrighteous).
12. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that –NO MAN KNEW– but he himself.
13— AND HIS NAME WAS CALLED THE WORD OF GOD.(but no man can understand this great mystery).
15. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword(the word), that with it he should smite the THE NATIONS: AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON: (in his coming kingdom).
It would be a good idea if you would study it for your self.
So there is the mesiah; he will come, but evil must come to the full first; then it shall be destroyed, not before.
wakeup.

Ed,Peter didn't ask Jesus, Jesus asked Peter, and they said the Son of God, then Jesus explains that this was revealed by the Father to them, not by proof text that God supposedly wrote.
Jesus IS the Son of God, he's Just not the Jewish Messiah. In the evolved, human religion of Judaism they developed inaccurate concepts about the coming Messiah.
Bottom line is, Jesus was very different.

Ed,Yes, that is obvious, but he does NOT say that ALL of the expectations within the OT scripture fit the Christ that he is. The Hebrew’s were writing about themselves and their wildly exaggerated relationship with God and the function of the prophetically expected deliverer. In so doing the Israelites lost sight of their purpose as that was contained within Abrahams blind faith; they were to be the torch bearers of a spiritual kingdom for the world, instead they developed a national egotism in their self described position as “Gods chosen people” to rule from material Israel.
Yes, again Jesus was the Son of God, but not the ill-conceived priest, prophet king that the Jews were expecting.
In short, between Abraham’s blind trust in the future and the arrival of the expected Son, the Jews went off course in their theology to the point of blinding them to the Son of God when he stood before them. The more common, unlearned people believed in Jesus.

Many of their reputed Messianic predictions, had they but viewed these prophetic utterances in a different light, would have very naturally prepared their minds for a recognition of Jesus as the terminator of one age and the inaugurator of a new and better dispensation of mercy and salvation for all nations.

http://www.holycitybiblecode.orgJuly 18, 2012 at 12:56 pm#333347SpockParticipantHi Colter,
Oh my gosh Ed? Are you slow of understanding?
No! Jesus is not the >Jewish Messiah< he will never be the Jewish Messiah, the Jewish Messiah is an erronious, evolved misconstruct based on material, nationalistic interpretations of their scripture.
The Jewish concept of the Messiah was based on a misinterpretation of their scripture, their place and function of a people.
Jewish converts to Peter and Paul’s new religion about Jesus naturally tried to authoritatively justify their faith in Jesus by forcing him into the OT when he really isn't there in a complete sense. Even the Pagan story of a virgin birth was forced.
“My kingdom is not of this world.”
Jesus Christ stands alone; he does not need justification from the very human OT scriptures.
