My oldest son made it to 4th grade in public school and they wanted to put him on Ritalin, after much prayer we chose instead to home school him. By the time he completed college he graduated with a 4.0 gpa and nearly all of his teachers spoke highly of him and his maturity. We're confident not putting him on drugs was one of our better decisions in his life.

May 26, 2013 at 6:13 am#345660davidParticipantThe first schools were religious (protestant) and were for indoctrination and obedience training. The schools were well designed for that purpose and still are to a large degree. They went to school so that they could grow up to be good protestants. The schools were filled with stories to induce the fear of god and the fear of authority. The prime method of instruction was to BEAT kids when they disobeyed or didn't do their lessons. These schools were really designed to beat the devil out of the kids. The idea was that kids are naturally sinful and free will is part of that, so they needed to teach children to suppress their own will, to not follow their own will, but to follow the will of their leaders and of God, whose will was dispensed by the religious leaders.
Obedience was really the main thing, along with indoctrination of the bible. Reading was taught, because unlike Catholics, Protestants thought it very important to read the bible.
This was the original purpose of school–obedience and indoctrination. As religious power declined and the state strengthened, the state began to take over the schools. But it was primarily for the same function–obedience and a different kind of indoctrination, patriotism. The schools were literally indoctrinating their students with how great their country was.
Really, traditionally, school has been about controlling what people think, how they behave.

organized religion does teach their own ways and protect their future because the new or renew proselytes are his success in survival, is it not
