Ed,
I have no idea why you use this scripture (John 6:63) in support of your theory:Ho Logos = Spirit
This is why I don't think you can use that (John 6:63) to support your theory.
The Greek for 'word' in this verse is not 'ho logos' and the verse does not end in the word 'spirit.' The Greek for 'word' is from rhema, not logos. The verse says that the rhema is spirit AND life, not just spirit.
John 6:63
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words (rhema not logos) that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.God bless!
Hi LU,Thank you.

Hi abe,
I believe that the 'was' is there instead of 'is' because the emphasis is to say that even in the beginning the Word was God and didn't become God at a later time.I don't believe that the Word 'was' God and then stopped being God.

John wrote that the Word that was with God and was God and was in the beginning to teach the divinity of the Son of God and that He existed before creation. I believe that John was pointing to the 'Word of the LORD' that was known by the Jews in their scriptures. They are being told that the Word of the LORD that has come to them and appeared in visions and they associated with YHVH, is the Son of God who came in the flesh…Jesus, the Christ.Do you see this also?

Hi LU,1Jn.1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked on, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show to you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested to us;) 3That which we have seen and heard declare we to you, that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4And these things write we to you, that your joy may be full.
1Jn.4:12 No man has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us,
The Apostle John was with Jesus during his ministry, 3 1/2 years. Why does he just come out of nowhere, and say this? He was not asked the question?
At last count there are 8 different verses saying no one has seen God.How do You accept this?

March 9, 2013 at 8:15 pm#337819LightenupParticipantabe,
I read something in early church history that false teaching about Christ was going around and John wrote his gospel to correct this and emphasize the divinity of Christ.Jesus is the root (invisible and divine) AND the shoot (visible offspring from the roots-plural, of Jesse). Jesus, according to His divinity is as invisible as a root and according to His flesh, He became as visible as a shoot. I think that the pre-flesh appearances of the 'shoot' were seen when the OT speaks of the Word of the LORD that was seen in some way, i.e. a vision Gen 15, a heavenly messenger sometimes translated as angel , as a man or what appeared as a man but called God or LORD or LORD God- Gen 18, Gen 32.
Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
2And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. 7And he said unto him,I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
Gen 18
1And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. 2He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth 3and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant…Gen 32:24And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,f for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel,g saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”
My opinion anyway.

Hi LU,Heb.2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
10For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11For both he that sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
12Saying, I will declare your name to my brothers, in the middle of the church will I sing praise to you.
13And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God has given me.
14For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16For truly he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17Why in all things it behooved him to be made like to his brothers, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to succor them that are tempted.
I think Christ is the ROOT. Jesus is the OFFSPRING.
Peace sister.

The reason I ask is because…. I have not read the OT from beginning to end, though I have the NT. It appears that you have, maybe?
2beesee,I have been looking into these things for around 2 decades. I have randomly flipped to Scriptures, letting God determine where I stopped. I was later moved to read through the NT a number of times but am currently going through the OT, where I just finished Daniel and started Hosea.
I have also had my ups and downs during that period.
I also have looked into Jewish doctrines of the First Century and before. Some times I look at later ones when I cannot find the earlier ones or when I hope to obtain a monotheistic point of view on Scripture.
I learn a lot through discussion and hearing the viewpoints of others as it proofs my teachings. Most viewpoints are lacking in knowledge but even then they show that something they get. Sometimes they get it better than I do. You have to listen to God, in any way he choose to speak, even if it is a corrupt high priest, John 11:49-51.
Good post Kerwin. When reading through Hosea, tell me who is 'as the Lion of Judah,' according to Hosea. Thanks!
LU,You misunderstand Hosea 5:14 as God is a lion to both Ephraim and Judah in that they suffer his wrath for their unbelief.

Jesus is revealed to be the Lion of Judah in Rev 5:5.
March 15, 2013 at 9:11 am#338418ProclaimerParticipantThe whole root and shoot argument that Kathi is making is a non-issue.
If the head of the woman is the man and the head of the man is Christ and the head of Christ is God, then Christ is our head.
And if God made all things through Jesus Christ, then that absolutely agrees with him being the root and the shoot.
It is no proof that Jesus is YHWH.

LU,I understood your implications when you asked me about the Lion of Judah. Lion is used to symbolize God's wrath in Hosea 5:15 and it is instead used to symbolism Jesus' authority over the house of Judah, that David ruled before him, in Revelations 5:5.
Jesus after all is not a son of Judah as he is of the tribe of Benjamin. He rules the land of Judah, whose borders have been vastly extended.
March 15, 2013 at 8:47 pm#338449LightenupParticipantJesus is a son of Judah.
See the geneology in Luke:
23Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, 25the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, 27the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,e the son of Neri, 28the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, 29the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, 31the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, the son of Nahshon, 33the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, 38the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.And the geneology in Matthew:
1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,a 4and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6and Jesse the father of David the king.
And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,b 8and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,c and Amos the father of Josiah, 11and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,d and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
Also, did you realize what scripture says about 'Judah?' Judah is a lion's cub. So, the Root of Jesse is also the Lion of the 'lion's cub' (Judah). I don't think that Jesus as the Lion of Judah speaks to Him being from Judah but instead, Judah being from Him as His Creator-the Father through the Son, imo.
Genesis 49:Judah is a lion’s cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?

I have always perceived that greed itself is an evil.
Okay Kerwin. But Gene and I were discussing Paul's use of the word “root” in 1 Timothy 6:10.
In that verse, does the word “root” refer to “what came first”? YES or NO?
Kerwin,Did you ever answer the above post?

Mike,The word “first” does not sound correct for a synonym of “root”. A synonym referred to elsewhere in Scripture is “foundation”. The sin, greed, is the foundation of every kind of, “pas”, evil.
