I wonder if we could keep our posts free of too many quotes. Some posts have quotes withing quotes within quotes and then one new new line or paragraph at the end, and then the next guy quotes that whole post and so on.
It makes it much more readable and easier to follow, when you quote relevant parts only, or just talk about what the other guy said with a copy and paste or just putting it into your own words. Opening 2 tabs can help with copying and pasting.
Another thing you can do when replying to the above post is not quote at all, just aim the post at that person by saying something like “To Bob”, “Dear John”, “Miss Jane Doe”, “To the comment above”…
That way, even if someone posts before you, it is still easy to follow and of course it is very easy when it is the next post. No need for quotes there. In fact lots of quotes just get in the way of the flow and the conversation becomes hard to follow because very few people read long and embedded quotes and coversing posts are separated by great distances.
Cheers.

May 27, 2010 at 10:55 am#192459AdminKeymasterHi guys. I have been using the Warning System as a friendly reminder to not let quoting get out of control. When I notice a post that has unnessary quoting, I have been sending a friendly warning (no demerit points) with a message that goes something like:
—
HiThis is not a warning, rather I am just pointing out that there is no need to quote when you are posting a reply to the previous post. It makes it hard to follow the conversation when you quote and when people quote quotes that contain quotes, it becomes hard to follow the conversation.
We are trying to get people to curb this practice. It also chews up a lot of paper when printed. Sometimes people print out topics.
In most situations, you only need to address the person you are talking to. e.g., “To t8”, regarding your comment…
Quoting is useful when you are replying to an older post and need to refresh the context.
Thanks.
—Please do not feel offended if you get one. Just trying to tidy up the topics that is all.
Blessings.

Almost all other software has quote brackets around the original when you click on “quote”. Here you have the quote in the lower text box and must clock on “preview” to get it all moved to one text box first. But even to do that you need to have at least a few letters in the top text box first.

However I like some quotes, it is beneficial to see what the person has posted. My memory is not the greatest and it helps me. So how many quotes can we make? None or some or one? Thank you…. Irene
