CATASTROPHIC consequences if ‘ground troops not sent to fight IS’
THE West have been warned the only way to defeat Islamic State (IS) is to send ground troops and if not there will be “catastrophic” consequences.
A US-led coalition of nations have been launching air strikes on militant targets in Iraq since last August to help local troops defeat IS.
The UK started providing air support last September after Parliament agreed to it but Western armies have been warned that more needs to be done.
Giorgio Bertolin, from Kings College London’s Defence Studies Department, said the best way to defeat IS is to send in soldiers on the ground.
However, he admitted after the public outcry surrounding the Iraq war it is “extremely unlikely” that it will happen.
He said: “Realistically, the best thing to do would be military intervention, not just with airstrikes, but with troops on the ground.
“However, after Iraq and Afghanistan it is extremely unlikely it is going to happen.
Islamic State releases video showing beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians in Libya
Islamic State has released a video purporting to show the militant group beheading 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in Libya.
The video, released this afternoon, shows ISIS fighters dressed head to toe in black, marching the captives, all wearing orange jumpsuits, to a beach.
The 21 men can be seen being forced onto their knees before they are beheaded by the militants standing behind them
Before the killings, one of the militants stood with a knife in his hand and said: ‘Safety for you crusaders is something you can only wish for.’
Egypt has vowed to avenge the brutal murders, which have been condemned around the globe, including by British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.
Mr Hammond said in a statement: ‘I strongly condemn the murders of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians by ISIL-affiliated extremists in Libya. My thoughts are with the families of those killed.

At least 35 more Egyptian Christians are feared to have been kidnapped by jihadists in retaliation for air strikes on targets in Libya.
Militants from the Islamic State and Ansar Al-Sharia are understood to have rounded up dozens of farm workers in the wake of bombings by Cairo, it was reported by local media.
The move is believed to be a direct response to strikes by Egyptian warplanes yesterday which came after fanatics released a horrific video showing the beheading of 21 Christians on a beach.
It raises the chilling prospect of yet another mass execution in what is being seen as ISIS’s bid to announce its presence in a new region where it is gaining influence.
Initial reports said seven men had been seized, but that figure had risen to more than 35 by mid-afternoon yesterday, according to The Libya Herald.

ISIS has threatened to flood Europe with half a million migrants from Libya in a ‘psychological’ attack against the West, it was claimed today.
Transcripts of telephone intercepts published in Italy claim to provide evidence that ISIS is threatening to send 500,000 migrants simultaneously out to sea in hundreds of boats in a ‘psychological weapon’ against Europe if there is military intervention against them in Libya.
Many would be at risk of drowning with rescue services unable to cope. But authorities fear that if numbers on this scale arrived, European cities could witness riots.
Separately, the militants hope to cement their control of Libya then cross the Mediterranean disguised as refugees, according to letters seen by Quilliam the anti-terror group, reported by the Telegraph.

Italy agrees to put 5,000 soldiers on the streets amid fears of Islamic State attack
ITALY have tonight agreed plans to put almost 5,000 soldiers on the streets amid fears of potential attacks from Islamic State (IS) militants.
The troops will guard sensitive sites and targets, including in Rome where around 500 members of the military will be deployed.
In the Italian capital the soldiers will help guard Jewish schools, the city’s synagogue and diplomatic residences.
The measures, announced after a meeting of military and security officials, will be implemented until at least June.
Authorities consider Rome particularly sensitive because it is home to the Vatican.
In the past, Islamic militant websites have posted vague threats against Pope Francis and the Roman Catholic Church.
The news comes amid rising fears of attacks by Islamic extremists in Italy after the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christians by terror group IS.
The atrocity, shown in a gruesome video released on Sunday, happened on the Libyan shore of the Mediterranean Sea which is a short boat ride from Italy.

On Europe’s doorstep: Islamic State have now infiltrated TURKEY and are ‘plotting attack’
MILITANTS from the Islamic State have entered Turkey and are plotting an attack in Ankara and Istanbul, the national intelligence agency reportedly revealed.
Around 3,000 militants from the extremist religious group in Syria and Iraq infiltrated Turkey through its southern border after being pushed from the pivotal border town of Kobani.
Turkish newspaper Hurriyet broke the worrying revelations from an internal memo from MIT (Millî ?stihbarat Te?kilat? – the country’s National Intelligence Organization).
Some militants, including senior commanders plotting terror attacks in Turkey, are thought to have already entered Turkey and hidden in safe houses, the internal note claims.
It adds: “Militants expert in suicide and bomb attacks are preparing […] attacks on the Istanbul and Ankara missions of coalition forces which intervened in Syria.”
Istanbul holds a huge significance for the Islamic State, also referred to as IS, ISIS and ISIL.
