Quote (dirtyknections @ Dec. 17 2008,02:45) There is another type of “fear” that the bible mentions people having toward GOD….but the “FEAR” that saves and is most helpful to us is the “reverential” kind… The other “fear” has to do with folks that will suffer adverse judgement from GOD
Yes DK,
We are not speaking of the fear relating to punishment.December 16, 2008 at 10:17 pm#114525GeneBalthropParticipantNick….lets be clear here were (NOT) but you are or you would not continually us the word FEAR and TREMBLING, when you could Just as easily use the word reverence or respect. which is what is being implied in the New Covenant. The word FEAR in the English language carries a different meaning then what is meant in the bible regarding our Heavenly Father. People who are guided by FEAR are unbelieving people with out true Faith, or they would not be FEARFUL.
peace to you…………………..gene
December 16, 2008 at 10:20 pm#114526NickHassanParticipantGb,
The greatest problem IMO with those who say they have faith now is their lack of fear of God and it causes them to disregard the eternal teachings of His son and sons in favour of those of modern foolsDecember 16, 2008 at 10:52 pm#114533GeneBalthropParticipantNick……IMO (NOTHING) could be further from the truth. Do you think GOD is so weak He can't Keep and deliver those He is working and (CREATING) Salvation in. Nick (FEAR) Causes a deterrent from GOD , All these fear mongering Preachers are using the medium of fear to control and get advantage over simple minded People, There are hundred if not thousands of them. They put people into captivity in there minds and them proceed to steal and rob them of there time and money. Modern Christianity is almost solely work through the medium of fear.
Hell fire and brimstone preaching is in most all modern churches, it gives them power over People. WE Have not be CALLED to that, but we have come to that City whose builder and Maker is GOD, WE are a Royal Priesthood an HOLY generation WE are the Son's and Daughters of the Living GOD along with our Brother Jesus. If we do wrong our Father knows how to chastise us and if need be scourge us. We need to be like David who said (thy Rod) and (thy Staff) (COMFORT ME) , why because David Knew when GOD used His rod on Him , He knew God loved Him and David leaned on GOD as a STAFF, and found comfort in Him. WE to need to be like that. IMO Fear has no place with the Children of God. BUT FAITH WORKING THROUGH LOVE.
Anyway that the way I see it Brother, love and peace to you and yours……………………gene
December 17, 2008 at 2:32 am#114546NickHassanParticipantGB,
God has never been the problem.
It is faithless men who do not fear Him and wander away.
They have the choice to do so still and the carnal mind is so easily deceived.December 17, 2008 at 3:13 am#114551GeneBalthropParticipantNick…..wrong its fearful men who don't believe Him or they wouldn't be so full of fear. The fearful are the unbelieving if they truly believed Him they would obey Him. The whole nation of Israel was shot up with fear and they were Faithless and unbelieving. Fear was used for a FAITHLESS generation. Even Satan is Said to FEAR and TRIMBLE Right. All who have the Spirit of Satan in them FEAR and TRIMBLE.
And they have (NO) Choice they are what they are and influenced by what in them. They are held in captivity by their fears. True Faith in God is not in them or they would love God and Not live in FEAR of HIM. I Hope thats not your state Nick.love brother…………………..gene

This is why parents send their kids to Catholic schools – to put the fear of God in them!

But Nick, God doesn't want fear to keep us near to him….he wants us to love him.Can you imagine making your children so fearful of you that they were afraid to leave you? Would that be the kind of fulfilling devotion that you would want?
I think God, our Father, operates on a similiar level.
December 17, 2008 at 8:23 am#114593NickHassanParticipantHi not3,
Not the world's fear but taking care in what we say and how we worship Him and treat His teachings.December 17, 2008 at 4:20 pm#114603GeneBalthropParticipantNIck…..why not just drop the word FEAR, if that What you don't really mean, and use reverence or respect or better LOVE. Which includes all the others. Remember it Say “the goodness of GOD leads to Repentance” (NOT) the FEAR of GOD, “for fear has torment”. Maybe you still have some of you earlier Catholic teaching still in you brother. LOVE FULFILLS THE LAW, FEAR FULFILLS NOTHING

Not the world's fear but taking care in what we say and how we worship Him and treat His teachings.I like this: the goodness of God leads us….not fear.
I think what you may be trying to say – be careful not to fall away from the Lord – respect his Word – be alert to pitfalls, can all be said without using the word fear. It can all be accomplished without fear, imo.
Mother Church keeps us safe in her courtyards while telling us not to leave the yard. She seems to answer all of our questions, but then again, she gives us which questions to ask. It's okay to search, doubt, wonder, wander…our God is big enough. Trust Him.
I'm sorry Nick, I have to agree with Gene on this one. You cannot use the word “fear” and not go directly to what it stands for – punishment. We would never fear if we didn't think we'd lose our lives or be punished.December 17, 2008 at 5:27 pm#114611GeneBalthropParticipantMandy……….Scripture plainly say that, “nothing is perfected in FEAR, Because FEAR Has TORMENT” , your exactly right sis.

December 17, 2008 at 5:47 pm#114615Not3in1ParticipantGene,
There is an 'old school' way of thinking here: fear will keep them on the straight-and-narrow. Fear keeps men bound – it's the glue that keeps them stuck.
But fear only goes so far. It may keep them bound to obeying the RULES for fear of punishment (I do the speed limit when an officer is behind me). But obeying out of love requires a desire to want to be in the relationship. Paul tells us to make the gospel “attractive” to those who are looking. Fear would not rank up there for drawing people to the Lord.
December 17, 2008 at 6:15 pm#114618NickHassanParticipantHi,
The OT and NT are united on the need to walk with great care before our God.December 17, 2008 at 7:01 pm#114628TimothyVIParticipantI am curious why anyone would long to spend eternity on their knees trembling in front
of a master that they fear. This does not sound like paradise to me.Tim

Exactly! What about “…my burden is light….”. Just lip service?
True, the OT is full of ways in which people were cruely punished for not “walking with care' before the LORD. But the NT shows no such thing.
I do agree that the Almighty deserves a healthy amount of respect/trembling. After all, I might “tremble” if I met Pres-elect Obama – why not the Almighty?
December 17, 2008 at 8:01 pm#114635TimothyVIParticipantShoot, I actually had lunch with the first President Bush one day and I trembled, but it was not out of fear, except maybe for all those guys standing around with those things stuck in their ears..

December 17, 2008 at 8:10 pm#114636GeneBalthropParticipantTim………God is a GOD of LOVE and HIS LOVE is supposed to be Shed around in our Hearts, Scripture says “LOVE Casts (out) fear. I wonder what kind of HEART who CASTS IT IN is FROM. Jesus said “my joy i give unto you, the fearful and unbelieving heart has no joy how can it seeing that “nothing is perfected in Fear for FEAR has torment”. Reverence and respect Yes, FEAR NO. People stuck in the OLD Testament alway us fear on others it gives them a sense of empowerment over others. Fire and Brimstone control freaks of little or no faith.
Love to you and yours Tim…………………..gene
